The kryptonite for Hardcore PC gamers: Accessible

Thread Starter
Kryptonite is a material that is the ultimate weakness of superman, if you guys don't already know (wiki it if you're interested)

With so much discussion about console ports, dumbed down games and so on. Don't you guys just freak out, or simply go into rage mode when some developer of a to-be-released game from a popular series go: we are trying to make the game more accessible to more gamers out there, making it more appealing to a wide range of gamers etc etc etc etc....

This is an unstoppable trend since console platform does contain more gold in it. And no offense guys when I say 'rage mode', I just built my sig rig recently, havent tried any so called console ports yet, but i got DA 1 and 2. I'm still imy last stages of 1, so I don't know how 2 is yet. I probably feel like crap just like a lot of you when I start playing 2, or I may not.

It seems like only the witcher and bf series are going to save it, but some people are also reserving comments on that, saying that we should wait till their console counterparts that come out after the pc version and sell billions of copies THEN see if those developers would change their minds about using pc as main platform.

Hate to say this but that really might come true, especially when console versions of witcher 2 have already been announced.

What do you think they could have done? What do you think WE could have done? Are there any other good dev out there still holding their ground on developing real PC games? Discuss.

I honestly don't get it why so many people care about games being primarily developed for consoles and then being ported to PC. I just enjoying gaming on the PC rather than consoles.

I welcome the accessibility, personally. I have nothing against ports by default, some ports are quite good. And hell even a game that's renowned as a poor port can still be good, case in point GTA IV. The only time I hate a port is when it clearly detracts from the experience, ala Saint's Row 2. Every single review I've read and watched on this says two things. If they played on a console, it's the best sandbox murder simulator in the land. If they played on PC, it's an unplayable mess of bugs and lag.

Because a lot of people think that the 'quality' of the game isnt right because it was intended for consoles, and yeah, a console port may not have full directx11 support and extreme high res textures, but it still has the same core story in it.

this, you nerds need to calm down on the console vs pc shenanigans. its games, thats it, stop making it technical. most companys want money, and consoles is where its coming from.

Many hardcore console gamers had the same issues when games when mainstream with the Playstation. However, they never really appreciated the fallout for the hardcore. Dozens of games were brought to the US that would have never - NEVER - been brought here even a generation before the Playstation. With a wider audience, it was no longer financially risky to release experimental games, or games would only find a small audience. After all, if a platform is adopted by 50 million users, selling to even 1% of that could make a game enormously profitable.

Simply put, the more people invested in a platform, the better the games will be. A game like Super Meat Bros. would have been relegated to obscurity 15 years ago, hidden behind the big name franchises. It would have received critical accolades but it would have sold poorly and the developer would quietly go out of business. Years later it would continue to appear on "best of" lists of the greatest games that no one ever played, but still deserve attention. Nowadays, great titles are not only in greater quantity, but they also get the exposure that they're warranted, and have the sales that encourages creative development, not stymies it.

So be thankful there's actually a wider audience out there: for every 1,000 people buying Call of Duty, they only need one to buy a game like Super Meat Bros. to make those games worth making.

It's not too often you get a solid release with minimal issues for any PC game.
