New to OC, z68

Thread Starter
Was wondering if anyone can give me some pointers.. I'm reading all these walkthroughs and I just can't seem to replicate some of these results. Maybe it's because I have a z68 and the walkthroughs aren't aimed at the z68? I have bios 0501.

Build is in my sig.

Asus settings.
bclk: 100
multi: 45
pll overvoltage: enable
mem freq: ddr3 1600
epu power save: disable
LLC: ultra-high
vrm freq: 350

duty cycle: extreme
vcore: 1.36
dram volt: 1.5
vccio: auto
cpu pll: auto
pcm volt: auto
dram data ref: auto
dram ctrl ref: auto
dram data ref: auto
dram ctrl ref: auto

cpu config:

iatm: enable
ht: enable
apc: all
lcm: disable
edb: enable
ivt: enable
eist: enable
turbo: enable
c1e: disable
c3: enable
c6: enable

I can't seem to get the oc stable.

IGPU is enabled, should I disable it?

I'm using linx 0.6.4, cpu-z 1.57.1, real temp gt 3.6, and asus cpu freq monitor.

I would like to see if I can get 5.0ghz stable out of the card so I can start folding. It's pissing me off since it seems everywhere people are saying how easy it is to get a stable 5ghz out of the 2600k but I feel like theres something wrong with mine.

Thanks for reading, sorry for long post.

ASUS P8Z68?

Have you been overclocking in small increments and then running benches to test stability or did you just straight overclock it that high?

Please click on User CP then click on your Edit System link and put in your system specs. It makes it much easier for folks to get the entire picture when trying to help troubleshoot issues.

I would try adding a little more vcore personally, but without knowing what the rest of your system looks like, it could be a few other things such as RAM voltages causing instability.

Isn't there a link to a OC guide for dummies for Sandy bridge (I think that is the real title) on here somewhere? I think it's in the 24-7 thread somewhere. It teels you how to OC your SB step by step, from 4.0 to 4.5 to 5+

But you have to remember not all SB CPUs get to 5+ stable. No cpu is identical. Some clock very high and some don't.

I got all the way up to 50x with stock volts before post errors, then I backed it down to 49 and set vcore per the list 4.5-4.8 = 1.35-1.4, I started it at 1.4 then stressed test, bsod + temps at ~ 75-76, couldn't get a stable vcore setting without the temps being over 80 during linx stress test. I then backed it to 48, same scenario, could get a vcore of 1.5 but with the h70 temps got over 80 (I stopped the linx run as soon as I saw 80)

I can get 46 stable at 1.4 and 47 at 1.435vcore but the temps are in the 70's, which is another frustrating thing since I am getting mid 50's at 45x but it jumps to low 70's at 46x

I'll go ahead and do that, thank you sir. I have corsair vengeance, as per the label on the stick themselves I set the dram to 1.5v

my fault for not wording it correctly=P

But yea, I'm frustrated, it looks like the chip itself can go well above 5ghz thats why I'm wondering if theres a setting I'm leaving on that I should turn off vice versa?

Do you have the core turbo setting (In AI tuner section of the BIOS) set to "All cores (can set in OS)" or "Individual Cores"? (Something like that, I would have to look to get the exact names. ) Asus recommends using the individual cores setting when overclocking above 4.8Ghz IIRC for better stability.

If you are crashing at x50 multiplier @ 1.4v, you definitely have more wiggle-room to add vcore. You can set your vcore to 1.5 to see if you're stable at this frequency, although your temperatures will obviously be much higher. If you are indeed stable, start to slowly back down in vcore until you get the infamous x124 bsod. Bump up the vcore a hair from this setting, and you have your stable 5.0Ghz voltage. linx/prime95/IBT are good starting points for stable voltages, but if you game - definitely load your favorite game for a good 20 minutes to an hour as well. I've had overclocks that are 2 hour P95 stable, but croaked 2 minutes into StarCraft II or World of Warcraft.

If your computer is not stable at 1.5v, then I wouldn't recommend trying to obtain a 24/7 5Ghz overclock as that's pushing a lot of voltage through your CPU for extended periods of time. I have a dud of a chip, so trying to hang out at 5Ghz requires me to pump 1.52-1.55v through it. While my cooling can handle that heat, I don't feel the need to destroy my chip for a slight increase in speed that I won't notice in my day-to-day operations.

Good luck!

I will try the per core setting, thanks for the heads up. I'm starting to think that it's better to just leave it at 4.5 for now, and possibly sell the h70 for an h100 before trying 1.5v's.

The 46 stable at 1.4 sounds pretty good for a 24-7.I mean you don't really want too run 1.5 24-7 do you?
