My First Build

I have just got my new PC parts in the post/mail and im not sure if my PSU can handle what I got lol. First of all the motherboard I got is a Gigabyte M68MT-S2P has got a 24 pin ATX main power connector (sorry I'm not exactly what you would call an expert) and the PSU I have has only got a 20 pin connector, will that power it (I have tried plugging it in and it did fit there was except for the 4 empty pins and I just wondering if it will power on and not fry anything) the other thing I got with it was 4 GB DDR3 RAM 1333 MHz and an AMD Phenom ii x4 955 black edition 3.2GHz. the PSU I have got is 400 watt and at the moment I don't have anything else I was going to use the HDD and graphics card from my old PC until I have more money to get better ones and it turned out the graphics card was AGP and the motherboard doesn't support that and also the HDD that I was going to use is a PATA which again isnt supported by the motherboard. all I was planning on doing is see if they work ok in the bios until I can get a better PSU, graphics card and HDD.

Likely it won't work without a 24 pin ATX plug. Though I don't advice it for the long term you could probably purchase a 20-to-24 ATX plug adapter for 5$ until you can afford a proper PSU. The problem with yours isn't that it is only 400W, it's that most of these Watts are available on the +5V and +3.3V rails, too little on the +12V.
Though you haven't told what the PSU brand/name is judging from the lack of 24pin ATX it's probably a pre-ATX 2.0 PSU that have low +12V power. As such this PSU probably has some 200W of useful power (+5V and +3.3V don't really matter unless you have 20HDDs). You could use a 20-24 ATX adapter, but on the long term the PSU is inadequate and will likely fail. The ideal would be to spend some 40$ on a good quality Antec Earthwatts 400W which has all you need. I don't say this often enough: buy a quality PSU as it will power all the other parts.

Thanks for the advice on that I havn't tried switching it on (none of the power cables are connected to the mobo at the moment) I am planning on getting a 800W PSU for everything because im also planning on getting watercooling and 2 Radeon HD 5670 1GB and a case full of neons and extra fans I was planning on getting something like this http://www.dabs.com/products/best-value-ezcool-80--ambiance-800w-psu-793X.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=product+search&utm_content=Q200 which I was going to order on Monday anyway (and I will have to get a new HDD as well)

Any reason behind 5670's?

Its better to get one good card then 2 old ones.
Why not 6950 then plan later to add another one?
Or if its too expensive, get one 5770HD , one 5770 performs better then 2x5670.

Well I only need the graphics card for CAD and web development and maybe the occasional game, that and the 5770 is out of my budget lol. and I have just remembered I can only have one because I don't have 2 PCI express x16 I only got 1
