No joke about the shipping...lol. I ordered 2 days ago and it still hasn't shipped.

I would suggest doing the CCENT / CCNA CBT Nuggets and using Cisco Packet Tracer to use virtual switches / routers and buy absolutely no hardware.

Then if you want to proceed to the CCNP buy some hardware.

I have worked in IT for 17 years trust me this is the best way to get started.
Definitely 2nded, I love Jeremy Ciora's CCNA curriculum.

1. Get good diagrams of LAN, DMZ, and WAN if you have all of those.
2. Diagrams of switch closet locations, and acess point locations.
3. Any of those "sepcial" networks that have unusual configurations. IE: VPN tunnels doing crazy dual natting because you don't want to route each others subnets inside your networks.
4. Any firewall configurations? Ask if you are using simple ACLs or Access Groups.
5. Spare equipment.
6. Process to replace equipment. Do you have a support contract with someone.. do you need to have access to some webportal to do RMAs?

Just a few off the top of my head.
4. Indepth knowledge on your moitoring tools. I would go as far as setting up a new server to pratice installing them.
Knowing those locations before he leaves is a big one. I got put into an office where the previous network guy liked to put things up and not tell anyone. While doing a network crawl with CDP I found 8 switches no knew were there. And even though we have WCS up and the access points are "on the map" they tend to be about 10 feet off the map location in the system. I'm constantly having to go find the point and adjust to maps to the system can recalculate the radio frequency interference and distances to neighboring APs.

I've been to a few of our sites, and they are wanting to get me out to all of our sites before all is said and done. Also, we have pictures of every site, so that helps a lot.

Yeah and not to mention the stuff that isn't running CDP.
