Which router will work better for MMO gaming & Netflix

Thread Starter
I have a roommate moving in in a couple short weeks and we need to upgrade the networking equipment we've got as my old Linksys wrt54g just isn't going to cut it anymore. My D-Link 655 router bit the dust, so I pulled out the Linksys which is working for wired, but the wireless isn't working anymore so time to upgrade.

Anyways. I'm leaning towards the Asus N16 (with dd-wrt) or the N56 router depending on how much my roommate will pitch in towards the upgrade. Which one will work better for online gaming (there are at least 3, and sometimes up to 6 computers connected playing WoW or Rift) and we're going to be using Netflix connected to an Xbox 360. Sometimes all this concurrently. Also we occasionally torrent (mainly when I'm downloading a new anime series). Any other router suggestions are also welcome.

The other item we're looking at getting is a Cisco SLM2008T-NA gigabit switch as most of the devices in the apartment will be wired. I'm planning on just using two ports of the router to the switch for a little redundancy, and the other 6 ports will be plenty for the PCs & Xbox, and the one laptop will be on a wireless channel from the router.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

if you arent going to be using the 5GHz band then the n16 with a gigabit switch would do.

you can also look into the E4200 and the WNDR400 with the money youll save buying the consumer switch.

Ended up ordering the N16 a little bit ago. I think I'll be running TomatoUSB on it, and I'll be holding off on the gigabit switch for now.

Make use of tunneling to the game servers. It helps a lot. There's lots of open source tunnels out there to use.

I'll look into it, although I thought that tunnels were against the WoW ToS... I don't remember really... but I'll look into it. Also, I Lied about the switch, ended up getting the Netgear GS108T-200NAS switch because of the 10% discount code. So I'll have my pretty good router, and a very nice gigabit switch for the house

Could you explain a little more about this, please? I'd like to try it but I have no idea where to start.

Probably the best router I have ever used for gaming and streaming. Has better range than our $150 D-Link router and port forwarding is extremely simple. Look through the reviews on Amazon if you don't believe me.

you can throw your own tunnel or you can use a paid connectivity service which allows you to do server portforwarding.

^I think WOW allow tunneling because I can reach it with YF. Reason I'm using YF and paying for my connectivity service is coz I am on a mobile network which is fake internet. If I want to get a server two round trips gets sent at times just to find it coz it makes use of a ARP proxy.

But you guys that are on hardlines tcp ip networking you can use a application like tunnel.jar. Its a small java tunnel where you just add the server and the ports. There's some other things you have to do but I will try and find my settings and the application somewhere then ill upload it with the instructions. Its a very small application.

Great thing about it is you can set your rtt values as well as assign higher priority to your tunnel when latency drops.

That's is pretty far over my head, but I kinda get what your saying. I'll have to do some more research about it... thanks for the info!
