Just my two cents
I see what you're saying. I know that it is still technically stealing, but the movie industry does well enough. The theater is where they make their money, dvd sales not so much.

Pirating games is a different story though, that truly pisses me off.

Just because it wasn't the traditional war movie, doesn't mean it was bad... Kinda like Jarhead. Though Jarhead was wayyy off what was expected.

I have never in my life ever heard of requiring a lisence to own a copy a film, if there ever was one the disc media certainly wouldn't be good enough.

If you download copyrighted media you do run the risk of some horrible organisation finding out your IP which will lead to them sueing you. They do not care if you already own it, purchased the music/software/film after. All they care about is getting money out of you, it is a new industry.

Most judges are not tech savvy enough to understand that an IP address alone is not a sure way of identifying a person using a computer which is why people get sued. Either pay up a couple of grand or we'll take you to court and bleed money out of you by forceing you to concede when the legal expenses get too high.

It actually is an industry and it's only going to get bigger.

It doesn't matter at this point what "most judges" think; ONE judge already said "an IP address does not mean a person" Therefore any attorney can use that as legal precedent in defense of these 50,000 people.

I'm fairly certain the judge that made that statement was Canadian......

It was a previous news thread on here actually. The judge cited a case in the US where the FBI raided a house that was the listed IP of a guy who was watching child naughty videos, turns out it was the neighbor skimming the wifi. So the judge asked the plaintiff to find sufficient evidence that the owner of that ISP connection is the one downloading it, and not a neighbor.
