What is the reason behind AMD motherboards being cheaper anyways? It's something I've never understood.

$179 2500K @ 5Ghz vs $200 1100T @ 4.2....

Hmmm I wonder who completely destroys the competition...

Plus in terms of multitasking, I'd rather have 3 or 4 cores at the same or slightly less performance than 2 but more power, especially in the lower-end (i3 vs athlon x3/x4).
You didn't shop around very much then, you can easily get a comparably priced SB board.

However, author mentioned that he's comparing two fully unlocked Black Editions with two limited-overclocking i5's, but then failed to compare the systems after overclocking. An 1100T @ 4GHz+ is a more worthy competitor to the similarly-priced i5-2500 that can only overclock by a few turbo-multis.

I don't know many people that would buy a Black Edition and NOT overclock, so that's a bit of an oversight in this review.
But then why would you buy a 2500 and not the k? Once you overclock the 2500k vs the Phenom, it's the same thing all over.

Would you prefer a 3 year old $200 i7 920? Same result although to a slightly lesser degree.

I don't think that's why they released 970 and up. Releasing them now only makes sense. Expect Phenom II to replace Athlon II as the low end CPU once BD is released. Look how much 955 BE sold for this past sale at the Egg. I think it was ~$120?

This is how AMD plans to compete with Intel imho. AM2 boards are all but kaput. AM2+ is on it's way out. There is a surplus of AM3 boards, what with AM3+ already selling. Dual and 3 core CPUs' are gonna be phased out in favor of Quads. Athlon II may not be done away with completely, but it's a good bet this is how the market is going.

Honestly at the below $200 mark AMD usually has the more competitive offer. Sandy Bridge has impacted that a little but even the highest end Phenom II X4 is under $200. They still perform pretty well when looking at the big picture. For those on a budge AMD is still the way to go.

Bulldozer is coming out in a matter of months and those chips will the ones to compete with Sandy Bridge, Phenom II was the product that was supposed to compete with Core 2 Duos but came out waaay too late and took a die shrink to get there. AMD is one step behind Intel right now but they have been catching up.

Uh yes it is...

Increasing the instructions per clock(IPC) of any kind is over clocking. People on this forum need to get over whatever normative criterion they have just because turbo overclocking is non-traditional.

Turbo over clocking is far more logical than the type of over clocking that we're used to because it makes no sense for your CPU to operate at such a high rate of speed when its near idle/not in use.

DUH! Usually when something cost less it will lack features relative to more expensive models.

No. H67 and P67 boards both can over clock non-k models. Notice I said "i5 2400" as there is no 2400k. The only variable is that the multiplier on the non-k models top out at 41x which is good for 4Ghz at which speed it beats every chip from AMD in everything from encoding to gaming.

I believe it was Anandtech that compared the 2400 to AMD chips and they rendered that the 2400 was the best bang for your buck in terms of, well, everything.

H67- $69
i5 2400- $149(@MC)

Intel's entry level is better than AMD's "high-end." AMD needs to hurry up and launch BD so that they can be competitive again in the performance and high-end segments with Intel.

Yes it is better, but it's also a hell of a lot newer.

I clocked my 1055T to 3.6 and it was beating an i7 860 4C/8T @ 2.8GHz and a i7 960 4C/8T @ 3.2 GHz.

Which I am very happy with, but the tickler

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T-$169.00
Intel Core i7 870 -$285.00 (closest I can find)
Intel Core i7 960-$292.00

Now in the i7 v2
Intel Core i7 2600K-$325.00
Intel Core i5 2500K-$219.00 (I would buy that, but new, board and CPU)

I also think that yes the AMD is overpriced for what is offered but unfortunately this is their top end until the BD.
