PS3 image quality on U2311H

Hello,

I just got a new Dell U2311H yesterday, and although it's smaller than my Asus 24" 1920x1200, I'm loving the color accuracy, the stand, and everything else. However, I'm having troubles getting a good image on my PS3, which I have hooked up to it via HDMI cable then HDMI-to-DVI adapter on the end.

The panel is 1080p, and the PS3 runs at 1080p in the main menu (XMB). However, the second I go into a native 720p game, the PS3 outputs in 720p. The game is blurry, and even the in-game XMB shows a similar blurriness, indicating that the PS3's entire image output is at 720p. There are no signs of upscaling whatsoever, and sub-720p games like Vanquish look awful. Going back to the main menu makes everything crystal clear.

Has anybody had any luck getting great 1080p image quality on their 1080p PC monitor? From what I've read, the PS3 doesn't have a hardware upscaling chip like the 360. Or it does, and it only gets used for certain games. It seems like the PS3 ends up relying on the display to upscale the image. As far as I know, the Dell U2311H has no such upscaling hardware, and as a result, it does nothing but blow up a 720p image to 1080p. That's my guess, anyway.

This is my first post here, and my apologies if this belongs somewhere else. I've been lurking for a while before deciding to buy the U2311H, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out. Thanks!

Consoles don't have the power to play games at a required constant 60 FPS on a 1080p screen. Therefore they play on an SD screen at either 480p or 720p and just scale up.

disable the 720p and 480p options on the PS3.
It will upscale to 1080p for you on most games instead of playing at the 'optimal' game setting.

Yeah, I know. But I'm not seeing any scaling. Instead, I'm getting a blurry 720p in-game XMB, meaning my game isn't scaling up, but rather just putting out the image.

I've tried that, and the in-game XMB is still blurry.

EDIT: Okay, I've tried pressing the menu button on my monitor and it tells me what resolution it's using. Apparently the PS3 is upscaling some of my games to 1080p, it's just that the in-game XMB is still blurry as ever.

Corrected. There are games that can run at a solid 60 FPS @ 1080p.

Only very few games run at 1080, like Fat Princess. Most games (read: almost everything) are 720p.
