DisplayPort + IPS Panel = Worth it?

Thread Starter
I really hope this topic hasnt come up and I missed it but I am just about ready to purchase my first non-mass produced computer system. This is a purely 1080p full gaming rig and I am willing to spend a few extra dollars (probably $300 max) on a nice IPS monitor if it'll make my gaming look noticeably better.

I was looking at the HP ZR22W 21.5" S-IPS panel monitor and noticed it has a DisplayPort input. I found a EVGA GTX570 with a DisplayPort output that is under $300 after MIR so it looks like its a match made in heaven.

Before I jump the gun and make an impulse buy maybe some of you more knowledgable people could chime in here and comment on weather or not DisplayPort is worth it? Or is there a better 20-24" IPS monitor I should be looking at under $300? I don't want to overspend on something I won't see any benefit for, but I want the best gaming experience I can afford on a single monitor. Especially since money saved on a monitor will go towards an SSD as an upgrade I plan to make down the road biggrin.gif

Displayport works- it is simply a connector. I have it on my dell ultrasharp, and use it to connect to my laptop, and dvi to connect to my desktop. I do not notice any difference.

I do not know the HP, but dell ultrasharps have a great reputation, you should take a look at them. (Mine is 21"- the U2211H, $230)

I use displayport on my U2711. Not sure if it makes any difference, but it's a clean lookin' cable.

I would say IPS isn't worth it for gaming. Also, DisplayPort isn't any better than HDMI or DVI, image-wise. The most common use is with an adapter for Eyefinity for ATI/AMD cards.

It should be fine, display port is no different from DVI or HDMI except for the physical difference.

For gaming you should go for as big as you can afford, IPS is more for graphic designers, although they can be great at gaming too.

Displayport is just a connection with a smaller port. There's no image quality difference visible to the human eye.

Like some other's said, displayport is just a connector. It's not supposed to make it look better than Dvi or something.

If you were to get a dell Uxxxxh you might be angry when the refreshes come out.
There was a recent article talking about the new Ultrasharp lineup which is named Uxxxxhw

I wouldn't say that, there are several technical differences between the interfaces too.

Wow... so many replies so quickly... this forum is so great.

It seems like DisplayPort has more capability over DVI and HDMI but I guess the general consensus is that it doesn't make a difference for gaming or anything at this time. Good to know!

I've read both ways on the IPS vs TN panel for gaming. I'm unsure of what to believe out there. Some say you won't tell a difference on IPS panels for anything other than photoshop and others say once you go IPS for everything, TN panels just look dull.

Too many choices I swear im going on overload here!

With respect to size... anything more than 19" looks horrifically gigantic to me (yes call me sheltered but i've gamed with a 17" monitor for the last 6-8 years and i've become very comfortable with that size lol). So I think i'll be plenty fine with a 22" monitor and I don't think I want more than 24" at this time.

Dell ultrasharps are they way to go sounds like... seems to be the forum favorite then?
