Silver Arrow high temps

Thread Starter
I installed SA today only to see temps as high as 73-74 *C during linpack occt. My nv120 went only as high as 70c. [ E8400 @3Ghz 1.225v].

Comparing the way the cpu sits on both heatsinks , I noticed the SA leaves gaps in the sides :|. This could explain why, when I try to tighten one of the 2 bolts holding it the pc will not boot. (unequal pressure is my guess)

Reseated 3-4 times using AS5 and TCIII tims, with the same sad results.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

LE: Ambient temp 22-23 *C

Lower your ambient temp. At least list your ambient temps so your numbers actually mean something.

I dont think there is a pressure sensor... odd that it didn't boot. Something else could be messed up then.

Could you try leave your PC on its side to have an even distribution of weight on the CPU from the SA? And then let us know if there's any temp delta from previous test.

even with the case on a side, the temps are still high 70's. If this is because of the form of the base , is it covered as a fault by warranty ?

LE: yes, it's not flat ; I was thinking this was the problem cause if i tighten the 2 bolts all the way / or increase the pressure the pc will not boot . However the "print" left after applying tim seems ok.

There should be no gaps at all. Are you saying the base of the heatsink isn't flat? If it's not then definitely RMA it

Quote:
The base of the Silver Arrow is free from scratches or dents but upon closer inspection is not truly flat. It is concave. Thermalright does this on purpose in connection with its mounting system to apply more pressure to the center of the CPU. Its mounting system uses a pressure bolt in the middle which can be tightened or loosened to adjust the pressure on the CPU and in turn adjust cooling performance. The pressure ranges from forty pounds up to seventy pounds. For our tests we leave the bolt set to seventy pounds and observed no ill affects from doing so.

The gaps are there for a reason. I'm not sure why your temps are high though.

The concave is so slight you don't notice it unless you test for it (like with the grid paper they used at HardOCP from your quote) and definitely doesn't leave any gaps.
I'm trying to work out why the PC won't boot when full pressure is applied. Bent pins on the chip?
Thread Starter
yes, there were 2 bent pins on the cpu socket but i fixed them [this was over 3-4 months ago, during which the cpu was oc'ed @4g and was stable for weeks until the hot days came]

even though i fixed them , could they really be the issue with pressure ?

after going open air with the whole rig , i noticed the backplate was touching two small solder pins :| ( had to look sideways at the mb and backplate put upside down ).

i used electric tape on the backplate and now everything seems fine.
