Ok so one of my buddys work is upgrading there servers and I can pick up a pair of Xeon 5060 dual core HT processors there 3.2ghz socket 771. I can get them for $30 each I know I would need a server board but the 771 boards arnt too bad.

So what do you guys think? Idk much about xeons

Maybe haggle it down to $20, they're fairly old chips. Specs here.

hmm how do they stack up with say like a core 2 duo? They are HT xeons so 2 cores 4 threads each

Not very well, they're just server chips, back in those days servers had a much more linear task so not as much power was really required (or available for that matter).

Still, if you can pick them up for $20 a pop you could probably sell them on easily.

Hmm he said $25 would be as low as he would go but he said there getting ready to do away with another server with some 5100 and 5200 series dual core chips for like 35-50 each depending on the Frequency.

Those are Wolfdale architecture and seem to do much better in benchmarks than the 5000 series the x5272 3.4ghz looks to be *almost* on par with a i5 650 from what ive seen.

I might have to go with those instead. Idk the $25 for the x5060 chips is pretty good. Do you think the 5100 or 5200 would be worth the extra money being newer architecture?

*edit* looked around on ebay and they can be had for around the same price so idk about resale. Im just doing this to see how cheap I can build me a dual cpu set up lol I always wanted one
