My build, what do you think?

Thread Starter
Since I read about AMD discontinuing the phenoms with bulldozer, I decided it was time to switch my money over to an intel build instead of the AMD build I was planning.

I was just wondering what you guys thought and if there was any place cheaper I could also get the parts.

Processor:

Intel i5 2500k

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072

Motherboard:

ASRock P67 Extreme4

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157229

Hard Drive:

Western Digital 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 6GB/s

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136769

Power Supply:

XFX 650W Modular Power Supply

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207007

Graphics Card:

XFX Radeon HD 6870 (Black Edition I think, it was same price as the regular on tigerdirect so I figured why not)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...407&CatId=7005

Case:

Cooler Master Elite 430

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119227

Case Fans:

Cooler Master Red LED Fans (Going to switch out the front one and use the 2 others inside case just cause I'd like it red ha ha)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103091

Items I already purchased:

Patriot Signature 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220567

DVD Drive (Will basically be used to just install Windows 7, maybe burn a DVD from time to time...)

ASUS 24x DVD Burner

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204

If you're wondering why the power supply is so high when it's really not needed on this is because it's a cheap but decent power supply, plus I wanted a window in my case and it looks nicer without all the wires in there because you can plug in the wires you need into my power supply. Also, it's easier in case I need to upgrade anything in the future, so I don't have to replace my power supply.

Edit:

Also final price before shipping:

$782

That's honestly a lot of money for me at one time, so if I could find any other parts that perform just as well for lower, or these parts on other sites/stores for lower, that would be awesome.

Sorry to say this, my friend, but you did some poor choices.

1. The CPU won't OC (probably only a little). You need a K model.
2. The motherboard does not support OC very well. It is recommended to use a motherboard with 8+2 Phase Power.
3. You could've gotten a 2Gb. HD6950 for around the same price, or just a little more expensive with the possibility of unlocking shaders to 6970.
4. The PSU is WAY overkill. Look at my sig rig for instance. Your system would run fine on a 500-650W PSU.

Not saying your build is bad, but for OC, it's not going to quite cut it. That's just my opinion.

EDIT:

Since you probably are on a budget, I'd think this would be good for you:

1. i5-2500k
2. ASRock P67 Extreme4
3. 2Gb. HD6950 REFERENCE DESIGN - Preferably the first revisions - if you wish to unlock shaders to 6970.
4. Corsair TX650 V2 or XFX 650W (don't know the model names)

Hope it helped

I haven't bought it yet, and this is the reason why. Yeah I mentioned that the psu was overkill, but I want my system to be clean so I want to get a psu where you plug in only the wires that you need, not having them all just sit in the case.

Look at my edit

Well, you don't need a 1000W PSU for that. Just a modular

Chieftec Nitro 750W is modular and very reliable.

But if you really want a 1000W PSU, then go for it!

EDIT: Remember to buy a good heatsink for your CPU!

Some good, cheap ones:

1. CoolIT ECO A.L.C
2. Antec Kühler 620
3. Cooler Master Hyper 212+
4. Cooler Master V6GT

Drop the PSU for a 650W tops. 1KW is more than an overkill.
If you can find a 3.0Gps SATA drive for a much lower price, use that. Or invest in a 1TB SATA II drive ( more space doesn't usually hurt. Unless we're talking about number and density of platter but I'd rather not get into that). My only reasoning being that there's a 99% chance that you won't notice any improvements with the 6.0Gps drive. HDD's just can't spin that fast.

After you drop the PSU for a trusted (Corsair, Antec, etc.) 650W one, you can use the money saved the pad your GPU budget and get a 6950. Even if it doesn't unlock, it performs better. I'd only go with a 6870 if I plan to crossfire (and for that, the 650W is still enough)

Ohh, just saw that you wanted a modular PSU instead. Cool, look here:

Where can I buy a reference model for a 6950? Searching on google shopping right now, but everything is $250+. Also does XFX make good PSUs? Cause theres one 650W for a good price that's a modular design.

Also I switched to the i5-2500k and the motherboard you listed. (also this price includes the xfx 650w power source I mentioned) and the price comes to.

$751 before shipping.

This also includes the xfx card I was planning on getting because I cannot find a 6950 reference model.
