1080p Aspect Ratio

Hello. I have a 24.6" HD 1080p capable monitor that I use to watch videos on. However, whenever I download a 1080p video and watch it, the default aspect ratio is not 16:9. I get the black bars on the bottom and top of the movie and I thought that with my monitor I should be able to view the entire video on the entire monitor screen. When I force the aspect ratio to 16:9, the movie looks stretched out so something isn't right. Also note that when I download 720p videos and watch them, then the aspect ratio is perfectly fine and the movie takes up the entire screen size of my monitor without looking distorted or stretched. Does this mean that my monitor wasn't 1080p to begin with? It's a Hanns G 23.5". My video card is a Radeon 5850, if that matters.

Some movies are shot in a wider scope than 16:9. So even if it's a 1080p Blu-Ray those movies will have black bars at the top and bottom. Can you find the monitor model #?

It's a Hanns G HZ251H monitor. I got it a year ago on Newegg. Anyway, I've tried downloading the same exact movie both in 720p and 1080p and the results are the same. The movie fills up the screen fine in 720p, but the bars still remain in 1080p. It doesn't make much of a difference to me, since the quality is nearly the same and I don't have to download a bigger file, but I'm just curious as to why it happens even though the monitor is 1080p capable.

Some movies are shot in 2.20:1/2.35:1/2.40:1 instead of 1.78:1 (which is 16:9). 1080P means you just have 1080 vertical lines so the 720p version of the movie is probably encoded at a different aspect ratio.

TL;DR - You're monitor is fine.

So what kind of monitor would I need to view those movies without having the black lines by default? Or do I need to get an HDTV for it?

This is already been answered for you:

So to reiterate, not all movies are shot in the same aspect ratio. You're going to run into movies that have varying widths of black bars no matter what.

Apart from 1 or maybe 2 monitors you cant get a 2.2/1 aspect ratio monitor as it would be useless for anything other than watching movies shot in 2.2/1 ratio. If you were to watch a 16:9 ratio video (like all TV is) then you would get black bars at the side. 16:9 is the best compromise
