Long black screen after login

Thread Starter
I've had this happen on all of my computers since some win 7 update a while ago.

I will log on after a shutdown, (not hibernate or sleep) and after I log in there will be a black screen with just the mouse cursor for up to 10 minutes (laptop). On my desktop its only about 40 seconds, but still annoying as I JUST reformatted this thing yesterday.

I finally got around to trying to find out more about it as it is ALL of my computers but I don't see anyone else doing it.

After googling I just get resolutions to people who get a black screen that won't boot to the desktop at all (not what I have)

Has anyone else had this problem or found a fix?

There could be multiple reasons for what you are experiencing. Most common is network issue or driver problem. Since you are certain this happened after the update why not rollback to an earlier System Restore point to see if that solves it?

Oh I know it solves it, but I don't want to keep it like that, security updates and all that are usually pretty good, as is SP1.

Well what I am getting at is that it will isolate the problem and narrow it down to the update in question. Do you know which one? After all it could just be a compatibility update that doesn't affect you.
