Well I haven't used the 2011 WHS yet but on the old one you're supposed to use the special WHS interface thing, the app that shows you the storage pool disk space and where you add/remove plugins etc... you use that to share folders and create users. If you create a new user with that with same name and password as your normal desktop PC's user name/password you always use it make stuff much easier. I can only assume this is the same or similar on the 2011 version.
See WHS is supposed to make all this stuff easy and do it for you. Just lean back and be a normal user, let it do all the work (do an impression of a Mac user, yes).

I don't have WHS installed... I have Windows Server 2008 R2......
I assume that that is a whole nother ball game, am I wrong? Would I be better off installing WHS instead?
As for FreeNAS, I got it to work, then my friend showed me Windows server, and I decided to go that route. But I really did like FreeNAS.
