AMD athlon II x3 440 overclocking

Thread Starter
Hi guys!

I unlocked my athlon II x3 into a quad core and overclocked the base speed from 3GHz to 3.3GHz.

I heard somewhere that these processors have the potential to get up to 3.6GHz on average? I tried to go with that speed but my cpu computer doesn't pass occt test.

How should I try to find the best possible speed that I could get? I am very noob at this and I do not want to blow up any computer hardware

Thanks!

Would need to now temps and settings you are using.

But the way I did my unlocked 555 was used the multiplier until that wasn't stable, dropped it back one and then raised the FSB.

Fill out your hardware specs, so we can know your motherboard, PSU, CPU cooler, etc. This information is important, especially to know how safe it is to overclock on your rig.

It is generally accepted that when you unlock, you lose a lot 'wiggle' room when it comes to actual overclocking. So you might not be able to get 3.6, like I have. It all depends.

I just updated my system information. I hope I included everything right.
My multiplier is at 15x and bus speed is 220 MHz. Core voltage is currently at 1.456V.

I checked and CPU idles at 41C and goes up to 46C during load

That's odd. usually there is a difference of at least 10-12 degrees between load and idle. For instance, my rig right now idles at 22 and is at 44 under load, but YMMV. How are you measuring 'load'? Prime 95? Also, 41c is a pretty high idle temperature, especially with an aftermarket cooler. That is probably a direct result of your unlocked core: it makes your chip have a higher TDP, which translates into more heat.

I just checked this thread, and it shows that your board has a 4+1 power phase design.

In layman's terms, that basically means how much voltage your board is safely able to pump into your chip. Usually, the more/higher phase count the better (so 4+1>3+1). Here is the info about your board:

Quote:
870 Extreme3Phase count (VRMs): 4+1Heatsinked?: YesCPU TDP support: 125WWe recommend: 125W+, OC w/caution (use low volts)
What kind of voltage increase have you had to use (if any)?

Also, when you installed you ARCTIC COOLING HSF, did you apply a fresh coat of TIM? Your load temps aren't too high, but your idle temps seem to be a little high. If you did, how did you apply it? Did you spread it on yourself or put a tiny dot, or what?

Your temps are ok.Drop multipiler to 13 and rise the refrence clock.Mine is 269*13 and 1.48v .As long as your mb is better than me you should have no problem. Also make sure you overvolt ram and nb in the bios as well.If you already reached the maximum overvoltage that your mb allow then you could try amd overdrive. In advance mode you can give some extra voltage to the cpu. With overdrive i was able to reach to 3.6(268x13.5) 1.52v but the temp wasnt fine.As long as your temp is at 60 or lower you can easily reach to 3.6

What voltages have you tried? It's safe up to 1.5v I believe.

When OC'ing, are you keeping everything else in mind? (RAM, NB clock, HT, etc.)

I just recently upgraded to this motherboard so I haven't apply a fresh layer of thermal grease yet, still waiting for it to come to my house.

As far as voltage concerns, I have not done much readings on it yet so I haven't touch it at all. I leave it on auto in the bios.

For "load", I checked the temperature after a couple of starcraft II games on max settings....I suppose this would be my load since it will be the only extreme thing that I will put my machine through. However, I guess I should run prime 95. In my room, it is freaking hot, 80F. The "idle" temperature is when I'm not running anything? But it might be high because the computer has been on for all day long already?

This is a problem too haha. I have not increase anything else except multiplier and bus speed.

I have an Athlon II X4 620 ( 2.6 ghz stock ) . I reached 3.51 . They can reach it , but watch out for temps . 71c is the max temp for them . 65> is safe . and try not to pass 1.55 vcore .
