EVGA GTX 570 - All Games running smoother in Windowed mode - Please HELP!

Thread Starter
Hi guys. I hope this is the right spot for my post. I have a rig around 10 months old, of which has given me a spot of bother with the choppyness of many games.

i7-930@3.8
Evga gtx 570
Asus px58d-e
Patriot 6gb tri-channel ram @1600mhz
Maxtor caviar black 1tb 6gb/s
Samsung SM-P2450H Monitor (1920x1080)
900W PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

The thing is, since i built this rig, i have used an ATI 5850 and now the GTX570 to play my games, of which all games ran more choppy with the ATI. My problem doesn't appear to be with FPS, but a smooth output. When running my games in fullscreen (1920x1080) the problem is worse. BUT if i force the games into windowed mode, viola, everything is butter smooth. There is no reduction in resolution when i do this, still at 1080.

If i try to run my games with a lower res but FULLSCREEN, i get the choppyness still. It's kinda like microstutter, when i quickly flick the mouse, or focus on an object like a tree/lampost etc, and strafe around it keeping my focus on the object using my mouse. Here i will see i slight hitch where the frame skips to kinda catch up with itself. If i run my games with vsync/tripple buffering on or off, i still get the problem. I am tottaly up to date with drivers, and have tried it with different mice/keyboard combos to see if it was an input problem. No luck. Even stuck Vista on to try. No luck.

As far as i know i have everything in my Bios set correctly, as have 10 months of fiddling to get the best performance that i have now, but still the damn frame skip/choppy/jerky framerate persists. I have monitored the framerate in fraps using vsync locked to my native monitors 60fps, and the framerate will either dipp, or rise a touch when the choppyness occurs. To repeat, i dont get this problem when using window mode for my games. I have tried a tool to force the 1920x1080 window mode game to fullscreen which works, and is butter smooth. But if i set the game to run in fullscreen via game options, i STILL get the dodgy framerate.

Can anyone shed any light on this please? Why does the framerate improve to a silky smooth 60 fps using window mode, even at the same native res as my monitor sets it to? Thanks.

have you updated the drivers?

Welcome to OCN!!

What PSU do you have?

Try this:
1) Set BIOS to default settings
2) Un-install all graphics drivers, use Driver Sweeper
3) Install latest drivers
4) Update windows
5) Play game, post results here

If still not working try:
6) Re-installing games
7) Reformat and fresh install OS

What case do you have?
Do you have sufficient air cooling?
Also if you have HDMI for your monitor, try using an HDMI cable with your 570 and tells us how it goes, also try what OrangeBunnies suggested.

The gtx 570 is a really powerful card, it competes with the AMD HD 6970, so it should not have any sweat playing games on max.

Wow. People on this thread are pulling out some pretty random stuff here headscratch.gif

Obviously OP if you've installed a whole different OS and had the same issue, it's most likely *not* related to drivers. And this is clearly not how a temp problem would manifest itself.

Is there any chance you know someone with a suitable, alternate system you could borrow for testing your card in ... see if the problem 'travels' w/the card? Because if it does, I'd just RMA it straight away. Honestly, I've NEVER heard of this as an issue, so it really makes me lean towards thinking the card is messed up.

Thanks for the replies so far! Yes, i have tried different drivers, for all the kit in the computer, including the mobo asus/windows drivers. I have tried multiple drivers for the gpu so far, including beta, with little joy! I have an Antec 900 case and all my temps stay low enough even under load. The problem happens straight away in-game so i doubt it's temp related.

The PSU is unbranded at 900w, but this problem never existed with the old components with this psu. I understand the new pieces of kit could be more power consuming but surely not to that level. I'm pretty sure the amps on the rails for the gpu are enough to power the card. What would be signs to show that it wasnt enough? I never get any system lockups or BSOD and any crashing in-game is always fixed with game updates etc.

There's a chance i can whip the card out into a friends rig sure, but the problem existed with the ATI also. I remember running Mafia 2 in windowed mode, only to use a tool to force it back into fullscreen for it to run smooth as you like. Before it was choppy. And Left 4 Dead 2, Fallout3, Fallout NV were also fixed using the same trick. Along with many other games. The problem seems reduced in fullscreen mode with the nvidia, but the frame skips are still there.

I found your issue.

This is likely the cause. Generic Power Supplies are GARBAGE. Take a picture of the ratings on the side of the power supply for me.

If that's not the issue, i'll eat my shorts.

Oh to add to OrangeBunnies post, this is yet another brand new install. I just switched out to the new nvidia drivers last week, as the prob occured still with the new OS install. I do use driver sweeper, and boot to safe mode after to re-run just to make sure when switching out gpu drivers. As this is a brand new install, all games are installed new also, problem is still here! Thanks for the help so far, gonna try running through a few games with Auto settings on the cpu and ram via BIOS.

lol... like my mate's 1000w PSU...

all of which isn't on the 12v rail...

only 12 amps to the 12v rail tongue.gif

...

that said.. i have a good generic PSU in my Roten apple...

but it has a good 12v rail...
