I know bulldozer is close, but microcenter has an amazing deal for the Intel Core i7-960 for only $179.99. But, I always wanted to try amd, intel is always tempting me.....

So get the I5 2500K for 179.99 and a board. Thats the price on their 2500k's for months now. Get it with a board and get a discount.

Edit: Looks like you been here a while. Go Sandy now and sell off for almost equal price when Bulldozer chips release. Ive been real tempted but since i bought my CHV yesterday I guess Im stuck now.

So you're selling buy the i5 2500k over the i7 960. When bulldozer does come out I should sell my i5 setup, and it would be a good deal since I got it from microcenter?

I doubt BD would be able to beat SB. might match it but beating SB is unlikely. Just get 2500K. A cheap monster.

I agree with this. core for core, clock for clock, Intel will be quicker. And I kinda doubt that you'll find any SB chips on release for a price like $180. If there is, it's probably going to be the quad core, which a 2500k will dominate.

wow, I didnt know I5 2500K are so beastly, i'm looking around and I see everyone chip 4.5ghz and up. Yeah i see what you mean core for core, clock for clock, going to be very hard to amd to pull it off. rofl, how long have they been out for?

Yes i5-2500ks beat i7-950s in multithreading (when overclocking).

The per core performance of the i5-2500k is simply amazing. If you're a gamer it is hands down the best chip you can buy, the only thing that should be said here is whether or not you have the gpu power to warrant such a chip.

All preliminary information on Bulldozer shows the per core performance won't be very impressive. It will take eight cores to match or slightly beat an i7-2600k in multithreading, and the i7-2600k is only about 10-20% faster than the i5-2500k in multithreading. It will also require higher clock speeds with more cores to do it.
