Buying a GTX480 - which model?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I think I am going to go the full way and get a GTX480 rather than a 470.

Does anyone know why the prices vary so much? And which one should I get?

From what I've read, EVGA are best - so do you think the GTX480 SuperClocked is the way to go?

With regard to water-cooling, how loud are these things? Is it worth water-cooling them to make it quieter?

Thanks

GTX 480 is slightly louder than the GTX 470.but TBH if you find a dirt cheap one go for it, its totally worth it... 20-30% faster than a stock GTX 470 and when overclocked it will be 45+ % faster.
But if you have the money a GTX 570 worth it more.
Because the GTX 570 will perform almost as the GTX 480 but with less heat and noise.
I am wondering do your current GTX 470 causing problems or it is not enough for your gaming?

Sorry - I don't actually have a GTX470 yet, just an ancient 9500GT. I was going to buy a 470 and run two together but since I can't SLI them on Mac OS X (it's a Hackintosh) I figured it would be better to run a single GTX480.

Hackintoshes don't support the GTX5xx family properly yet.

GTX 480/470 when in full load (Furmark, OCCT ... etc) they will sound like a hair dryer but they wouldn't be that loud when gaming and when you do some normal computer usage they will be inaudible .

It'd be cheaper (and probably quieter) to get a Thermalright Shaman and the Thermalright VRM cooler for the GTX480.

If you're wanting it to be quiet, then yes, water cool it. I have a GIGABYTE GTX 480 SOC, and while it's great, I had to RMA it 2 times before I got one with a stable factory OC. If I were you, I would see if EVGA still sells the GTX 480 that comes with a water block. If not, it might be best to get an OC'ed version with the reference cooler on it so you can throw a full cover block on the card.
