Best 1GB 6950/6970 + Tri fire question

Thread Starter
I like the look of ASUS DCUII, but is there anything that is better/less PCI-E slots wide? I don't like the look of any of the reference cards, Heat pipes > Black plastic.

Oh and is there much of a difference between trifire 6990 with a 6950/6970?

I'm going to be selling my rig to my brother and rebuild my own.

Your not going to find anytime soon a single slock 6950/70. They will most likely remain a dual slot because of the cooler needed to keep the gpu cool. As for you tri fire 6990 with a 6950, my question to you is why? If you are successful in doing so, you will downclock and down power the 6990 because you can't sucessfully tri fire non identical cards. Just pick up one 6990 and that will be more then enough for anything that you throw at it. If you want to tri fire, pick up 3 6950 and have fun with that.

I didn't mean 1 slot, just not a 3 slot like the DCUII. I just want to know if there are any other non reference 2 slot cards that perform better/cooler.

As for the Tri fire question I plan on going multi monitor sometime next year and was curious as to what the performance difference between 6990 + 6950 and 6950 + 6970.

Kind of expected that response, but is there much of a difference between trifire 6950 (2GB)+6990 and trifire 6970+6990

Multi-minotor + 1GB Vram = FPS suicide.

Hey man, yes you can do a tri-fire with a 6990 and a 6950. They are the same SERIES. Nvidia needs the exact same card, but AMD you can use same series (57xx, 58xx, 68xx, 69xx...etc.)

With crossfire though you need to know this, because you can do it across cards the way they do this is they down clock or handicap the higher of the 2 or 3 cards to be the same as the lowest. So if you had a 5870 and a 5830...they are BOTH going to run at 5830 core and memory speeds. you DO however get all the stream processors of both . What this means is you're going to be limited by the 1GB of ram the 6950 would have. When graphics cards are in sli or cfx they are actually putting the EXACT same thing on both cards vram. its on combining the ram, its just mirroring them. (ever noticed the 597, 6990, 295, and 590 had 2x the ram of the actual gpu its made of, it only uses half...the other half is just a mirror of the first one) so, what this means to you!....

if you are needing MORE power than a 6990, you MUST be running at least a 2560x1440 monitor OR an eyefinity setup otherwise your card is overkill and cheaper cards can support enough power to run that resolution on highest. SO! If you have more that 1440p monitor or eyefinity you ALSO will have more pixels to push in which case you'll need more VRAM. If you're vram is bottlenecked at only 1GB then you'll have enough graphics horsepower to process it all, you just won't have enough vram to store it all . Long story short, stay with just the 6990 OR make sure you're getting a 2GB version of the 6950 from before, OR get a 6970. GL HF! PM me if you need help

I was only planning on going multi monitor next year, so I would be getting the 6950/6970 now then getting the 6990 with the monitors. I know it makes more sense to get the 6970 as it has the same VRAM as the 6990 but I'm still curious.

Does anyone know of some benches comparing the two trifire setups?
