Vista to Windows 7 upgrade 32bit to 64??

Okay so I have one of those nasty off the shelf HP machines.
I am gradually trying to make it not so nasty!

I have a *cough* copy of Windows 7 64bit and I want to upgrade my pc to that OS.

However my pc at the moment has Windows Vista 32bit.
It is my understanding that my hardware is 64bit capable as I have a
Phenom quad core 2.2ghz and the mother board Asus M2n68-LA is able to take 64bit?

Would this cause problems with my GPU drivers etc and can you actually upgrade from 32bit to 64bit?

P.s I want to do a fresh install of the OS not and upgrade

Thanks in advance guys!

It will take 64-bit. My sister has an HP PC that has 3GB RAM (2.75GB useable due to the IGP) and a 64-bit OS on it, and it works fine. You may want more RAM in the future, as I wouldn't run 64-bit on less than 4GB myself (unless for basic purposes), but at the same time, I wouldn't run less than 64-bit myself for a main PC either. I say go for it.

Unfortunately, you're looking at a new install though. You can't upgrade, and you will need 64-bit drivers.

If you do a fresh install to windows 7 64bit, then windows will automatically find the 64bit driver compatible with your upgrade. On the other hand, you can just dl all the 64bit drivers that you need, put it on a flash drive, load up win 7 64bit, disconnect from the net and load the drivers yourself. As for the CPU and mobo being compatible with the new os, like 2 mins of google search will give you the answers for yourself. Check AMD's site for the cpu and Asus site for the motherboard. I'm not trying to tell you that your lazy, I'm trying to tell you that you already have all the tools you need to conduct your own search and find the answers for yourself.

Hey JonnyFenix I have already done the research as I said 'it is my understanding that all the hardware is 64bit capable'
I just wanted to check with some people that know what they are talking about first as I trust this forum and its members as I have used this forum a lot.

Thanks! Will 3gb RAM be okay? As it stand at the moment I can play BFBC2 absolutly fine on my system. Changing to 64bit won't affect the performance will it? I would of thought it would make my machine faster!

The minimum requirement for Win7 64bit is 2gb of ram, so you'll be fine. Also, I think you'll find Win7 performing faster than your old Vista, its a much more stable OS overall.
