Preperation

Compaq 4400US

(2) 3.5 inch bays
(2) optical drive bays
(0) case fans
(1) 80mm case fan slot
(4) PCI slots
(???) case? slot in the front

Intel Celeron 1.3 GHz Tualatin
Socket 370 mobo
256mb ddr ram
40gb IDE hdd
8mb integrated gfx
1 IDE DVD-only drive and 1 IDE CD-only drive[/SIZE]

So I gutted a Compaq 4400US from 2002 for my build and to my disappointment the front panel and usb header cables were too short to reach the motherboard.

My solution is removing the front panel and extracting the headers, then plugging them into the mobo. Now I wouldn't need to short the 2 pins on the mobo to turn it on, but I would still have to keep the side panel open in order to turn it on. At least its a somewhat a button lol.

I will not be installing optical drives.

There are 4 holes in the front which look like case fan slot but I'm not sure what size it fits

Is it ok to leave the side panel open and have no case fans?

Parts Arrived!

Test bench

I ran it for the first time, and to my relief everything was good, there was a post then I proceeded to boot from my USB drive to install Windows.

I set the boot device to USB first, then tried to save and restart. But it just turned into a black screen after the reboot!! I tried plugging in the graphics card, using its vga port, then tried switching the ram around, still no luck! It just wouldn't show the splash screen anymore. I've tried about 20 times resetting the computer and only 3 of those times it posted but all 3 have failed to boot again after trying the save the bios settings. I've desperately searched the Internets to find a solution, and behold, this user said to hold the on button for 30 seconds while the power cord is removed then turn it on like normal. It worked!! Somehow it reset something, if anyone knows why it worked i am all ears.

Completed

I took out the 80mm fan from my the old PSU and hooked it up to a usb wire and used it as a case exhaust, though I question its usefulness since I have no air flow.

Alright here are my idle temps, I was expecting higher.

The GPU gets up to 85 C during heavy usage.

I am worried about the HDD though, It shoots up to 55 c during gaming. It is probably due to the exhaust from the GPU, too bad the holes in the front were too high up. I was thinking of removing the whole HDD cage and just let it chill outside of the case, or should I just put the HDD up one slot?

tips on cable management are welcome
