Want to build a 12-core system

Thread Starter
Hi everyone. It took me 56 minutes to render 9 seconds of animation yesterday on an intel quadcore PC redface.gif I want to build a 12-core system and I need your help with getting the correct parts.

I would prefer it be an AMD system, but I'm thinking that a dual socket intel board would give me more options, no? I can choose the processor no problem, so what I need your help with is for you guys to point out a good motherboard that's dual socket and will handle two 6-core cpus.

I've got all the other hardware that I need so I'll just switch out my current mobo/cpu with this new one. I'll also be getting about 24GB of the fastest ram that the mobo offers. So there we go. Let's hear some hardware recommendations!

Well currently I can't say I'm a professional, but the work I'm doing definitely is wink.gif I think I may be able to swing $1000-$1500 for it. This is really just for the mobo/cpu/ram, I'vce already got tons of other hardware laying around to build a system, so the main components are all that I need.

Actually now that I think about it, I need to check to see how much ram After Effects can utilize, as well as how many cores it can utilize...

IMO, just get an i7 970 (which you will overclock to at least 4ghz of course), X58 board, and 24 GB of 1333mhz/1600mhz RAM. There is no point in getting the fastest RAM available, since when you're populating so many slots you will most likely not be able to stabilize anything much past 1600mhz.

Beat me to it. I've never seen an SR-2 on sale anywhere though. This is your best bet for rendering video, I would think. Two CPUs will do you well.

Sadly enough, that budget isn't realistically going to score you an SR-2 and dual six-core Xeons. Maybe if you got dual Westmere-EP Xeons but that's still stretching your budget

I was taking a look at newegg and saw a few 12-core mobos, and the cpus aren't that expensive either. I'm not so well-versed in the whole AMD Vs. Intel thing right now, but I'm going to take it that those intel 6-core cpus are that price for a reason.
