Headphones + sound card on a high budget

I am looking to upgrade my sound card and buy some quality headphones along with it. I am willing to spend any amount for the sound card and about $400-500 maximum for the headphones. My primary uses for this setup will be listening to music (mainly metalcore, alternative rock and dubstep) as well as gaming. The sound card's I am leaning towards at the moment are the ASUS Xonar Essence STX or the ASUS Xonar Xense. Which would be better suited to my needs and which headphones in my price range should I buy? I should also note that I want to be able to connect my Logitech X-540 5.1 speaker system to the sound card.

Don't get beats or Bose. Sennheiser are nice for your price range. Do you want open cups that leak noise or quieter cups that are sealed? Are you obsessed with alot of bass or real audiophile quality? Do you like the drumbs or guitar sound the best? Diaphragm material matters depending on what sounds you wanna reproduce. Headphone amp external from PC sounds better than imbedded headphone amp. Do you want this? We need more info man. Also Asus dinar is prolly the best sound card out right now. I do love my auzentech, which has a great dedicated headphone amp and things like HDMI bit streaming but all of OCN hates it and likes the donation, so go with that. By the way, I hope you don't think your logitech is quality =\\ if so, you're in for a real treat.

You won't get the most out of your $400-$500 headphones with only a sound card, but as someone with that same setup, I can tell you it does still sound good.

Hmm, I think closed might be better if people around me will be able to hear noise leaking through the headphones on the open cups. I would like good bass as I listen to a lot of dubstep, and as for audiophile quality I've never really owned good quality headphones so I don't know if it would be that important to me or how it would sound. Overall I'd definitely say I enjoy drums sound the most. I don't know much about headphone amps but I was thinking I could just use the one in the Xonar Essence STX as I've heard it's nearly as good as an external amp.

I advise you to buy an external DAC, sell the x540s for 40 bucks or w/e and buy Denon D2000s+a better 2.1 speaker setup.

If you really wanted to use all 500 dollars, buy D5000s or Ultrasone Pro 900.
