Question: Do I need hyperthreading?

Thread Starter
I would be using a lot of memory and cpu usage.
If I were to open 20 maplestorys for long time usage like about 20hours a day.
I plan on getting the sandy bridge i5-2500k or i7-2600k with HT.
Now do i really need hyperthreading?

Yes you do really need hyperthreading tbh there is no real point to turning it off its like saying I have a Dual core but I would rather be slow and have a single core.

In the long run you will be better leaving it enabled the temps wont change enough to make a beneficial reason to disable

Is the $100 price difference worth it between the i5 2500k and the i7 2600k? I'm also looking into getting a SB real soon

Yes if you can make use of the hyper threading and 2MB of extra L3 cache - the i7 you could say destroys the i5 when it comes to doing workstation-based apps, encoding, rendering etc, thanks to HT. So if you're going to do any of those things pretty heavily or on a regular basis, the i7 should be best.

Other than that, if it's simply for gaming and nothing too CPU intensive and you really don't want to whip out too much cash, than the i5 would offer better bang for the buck since it's not *that* significantly slower than the i7.

@OP - I think the HT and the extra cache from the i7 should definitely prove more beneficial than the i5 in your circumstances of having so much game windows up smile.gif Go for it.

If you want the best performance, you have to pay for it. The 2600k is better than the 2500k, but not $100 better(this is debatable). So if you are keeping your system for a long time, get the i7 so you can get the most performance out of it. If you upgrade often, the 2500k is great price/performance and you won't be disappointed.

Either way you win. smile.gif

Thanks! I do mostly gaming and moving large files around often. Do both of them OC about the same? I'll probably go with the i7 because I don't like doing things twice.

Also why is it you have HT off and have an i7? Does it OC better with HT off?

They usually run cooler, thus enabling you to oc further.
