5850 BSOD, 100% Fan, random?

Thread Starter
Hey,

My 5850 will randomly go to a black screen and the fan will go to 100%. It doesn't matter if it's sat on the desktop or in game, it'll do it randomly. It's obviously a BSOD because Windows generates a memory dump and wants to check for a solution as soon as I login again.

Any ideas? The memory dumps tell me it's the ATI driver... now I heard ATI had rubbish drivers but this is rediculous, it happens a few times a day on some days, or not at all on others.

that sound more like a hardware fault to me, especially the bit about going to 100% fans.

I got something similar on my sapphire 5870 at start up every now and then. Little lights would light up indicating a power issue. I RMA's it.

You may have something sort of similar.

Is the GPU at stock? If not put it back to stock and see if it goes away.

It's still at stock, it's never been overclocked. I'd rather not RMA it but if it comes to it, I'll have to I suppose

there may be some LEDs (group of three) towards the top back of th card. (there was on my vaporx)

Do any of these come on after it goes 100% fan?

RMA it assuming you've done the 'easy' SW fixes (reinstall drivers etc.)

the random bit is very very dodgy and strongly suggests HW. If it was SW you'd think there would be a certain trigger but you're saying it isn't even affected by load.

If it isn't the card and I had to guess, might (might) be worth checking out PSU if you have a spare around. I had a similar issue in the past with my HTPC, one day the PSU decided to stop working properly all the time and started causing random BSODs, you will not believe the amount of pain I went through before finally isolating the PSU (I had foolishly thought it was a working-or-not proposition).

Use driver sweeper to uninstall all of your drivers, then install the latest stable ones. If the problem persists, RMA it.
