24GB ram kits? Where?

Thread Starter
I'm getting a mobo that accepts up to 32GB ram. I'm going to go with 24GB worth. I believe there are two ways I can do this: buy 3x 8GB sticks, or 2x8GB sticks and 2 other 4GB sticks. Which method would you take? I'm not sure if 'mixing' different size ram would be optimal.

I also wouldn't be opposed to a motherboard with 6 ram slots, but I haven't been able to find one.

Also, if I do decide to get the 3x 8GB set, where would I find these and which brand should I go for?

Anything above 16GB is just overkill.
Even running multiple VMs, i barely pass 10GB mark with Photoshop open at the same time.

Current mobo: Go for 2x8 gb, 2x4gb for dual channel.
x58, go for 3x8gb.

I would not get that much ram. 12GB/16GB is arlright depending on your channel configuration.

I've got some hardcore video rendering/editing to do so that's why I wanted 24GB. I think After Effecys and other programs will take basically anything you throw at it. It sounds nice, but... if it really won't make that much of a difference I guess 16GB may do.

2x4gb x 6 = 24gb

there you go, just grab 3 of 8 gb kits. they usually have 2 ram modules 4gb each.

If you are not going for anything beyond 1600MHz, You can buy 3x8GB kits or 2x 12GB kits of the same memory. They will work just fine. If like me you were shooting for 24GB at 2000MHz, the only ones I have found to work was the Patriot Viper Xtreme 2000ELK on my x58 boards. I am running 3x 8GB kits but there are 12GB kits as well.

I'm using two 3x4GiB Patriot DDR3-2000ELK kits with my i7 970 on my UD5. Works quite well, though DDR-1800 to 1900 is a more practical limit with this much memory. TO get DDR-2000 to work correctly I have to increase B2B CAS latency to unacceptably high levels.

Unbuffered 8GiB DIMMs are not really affordable yet.
