You could definitely get a nice i7 Nehalem combo with $300 if you went the used route.
My i7 940 (originally $540) + P6T Deluxe/OC Palm (originally $340) cost me $275 combined back in February of this year. I think that would be an average discount these days.

Remember, i7 9xx CPU's are only 5% slower clock-for-clock than the i7 2600K. And, the motherboards are nicer, and, at this point, they are WAYYYYY cheaper used. Plus, non-K Sandy Bridge CPU's, like the 2400, don't really overclock much, where as i7 D0's overclock like hell still.

So, go with something like an i7 960 + a cheap mobo. Plenty of $100 nice X58 motherboards for sale all over the place. Darwin96, a great seller here, is selling i7 960's for $200. I just bought one.
You could also get an i7 920 for $160-170.

Ooh, also, if you live near a Microcenter, they're selling new i7 960's for $179.99!
