For those that have a MSI 580 Lightning

Thread Starter
I just picked up an MSI 580 Lightning the other day. It's such an amazing card in build quality and performance.

One question I have for those of you who own this card.

The phase led's on the back of the card; are ALL of the phase led's always lit up?

All of the led's on my card are always lit up no matter if just sitting at the desktop or in Metro 2033 with maxed out settings. Is this normal?

Here, MSI has an Active Phase Power Switching utility that turns off power phases when they're not needed...

Enjoy the light show!

Lol had no idea that existed. Any advantage to actually having that app with the card? Will it make it last any longer?

Tehnically, it should yes, or definitely have a positive contribution towards its lifespan.

All GTX 580s or fermis do automatically downclock though at idle, when you're doing nothing to automatically save power by default, so by turning off those extra phases for that OC beast, it's definitely going to make it run more efficient, thereby generating less heat and power consumption.

If your setting in Power Management in the Nvidia Control Panel is set to Adaptive the card will downclock, if you have it set to Prefer Maximum Performance, it should not downclock.

Those lights are way too bright on the card, its probably the one thing I would complain about if I had to say there was something bad about the card.
