Would Removing Top Exhaust Fan Make Much Difference?

I have been experimenting with a cooler for my MSI P67A GD65, i2500K @ 4.5g in an Elite 430.

I currently have an H50, which fits very easily and the temps are in the mid to late 20's idle, but reach 64c Prime95, the ambient temp 20c and I'd like to reduce this a bit, so bought a Silver Arrow.

The big problem is that if I use the SA, there is no room in the case for any top exhaust fans, so I'd only have the one on the rear, with the SA pointing right at it.

Would this be a worthwhile trade-off, or should I consider the H70?

No exhaust fan on the top will be quite a hit on the temps yes, but having such a heavyweight-champion in the air cooling area shouldn't matter too much.

If you can wait a bit though, I'd get the Corsair H100 - it should prove to be a really good upgrade to your H50 (http://www.corsair.com/cooling/hydro...pu-cooler.html).

I run top intake and get significantly better temps than top exhaust. There's no way to what setup works best in your case without trying it. You may get an idea based on others' experiences, but you'll never know for certain. If you don't mind taking a hit on looks, you could try putting your fans outside the case in those top slots. I'd imagine it would have similar effectiveness, though probably a bit louder if anything.

The problem is that I might be able to get my hands on a second hand H70 for £55, although he says there is a slight buzzing coming from the pump, so he's trying to find out if that's the norm, or it might be RMA time.

I also have four days to return the Silver Arrow to get a full refund, so I'm trying to make my mind up asap.

There is no way the H100 would fit my case anyway and I don't know how much better the H80 would be over the H70, as I haven't seen any reviews yet.

I did think about putting a couple of exhaust fans on the top, but haven't figured out how to connect them to the psu.

I really don't think going from H50 to H70 will make that big of a difference for you, not to mention the worrying sounds. I can't really get a clear look at the top of the case from any pics online, but an H100 might just barely fit in the top fan area, much like a 280mm rad will fit in mine, albeit with a little drilling. If you're unable to do some testing with the SA in time, I'd say just return it and buy it again later if you choose. With smaller cases it tends to be pretty hard to find effective air cooling solutions...

Probably a cheaper, better long term option is to change the case.

You will be fine without a top exhaust. At least on my case, it does pretty much nothing.

I haven't seen any change in temps after removing the top exhaust on my P182.

Just be sure to use a rear exhaust with a decent CFM.

I've decided to return the SA, as I'm not keen on the fact that I have to take the mobo out to fit the thing, not a big problem to most people, but that would drive me up the wall. Especially as I've been given some IC thermal paste and have to give the relevant temps as part of the deal, meaning I will have to reseat the cooler three times. I like the cpu cut out that the case has and want to use it.

I've read that the H70 drops the temps by at least 8c, sometimes over 10c, so that seems a good bet, if I can find one second hand, otherwise the H80 might be perfect, after I've seen some reviews.

Cheers for the replies, much appreciated.
