buying a new card. gtx 570 or gtx 480 (custom cooler) - Page 2

im with the last few posts, the 480 with aftermaket cooling would be best. plus its cheaper. i got mine on an impulse buy when there were refurbished at newegg for $225. heck of a steel.

GTX570 VRM's are not made poorly or cheap.

The problem with the GTX570 and its power circuitry is that theres not as many Vreg modules as on previous cards like the GTX480,the REF GTX570 uses a third less regulators than the GTX480.

Too much power supplied over not enough Vreg modules.
So if anything bad design of the card, not the actuall Vreg themselves.

OP,if you plan on some major overclocking action just for the sheer fun of it then id take the GTX480,it will stand up to more overclocking torture than a REF GTX570.

If on the otherhand your just down for playing some games and maybe a light overclock to improve fps ...then take a GTX570.

If you could get your hands on enough money for THIS,then you could do it all ,this Asus has more power phases than the Ref cards 4 phase VRM.

480 is an easy choice here IMO..aftermarket vs reference cooling..no blow ups reported with 480s..

480, 570's aren't that great.
couple months ago when looking for my 570 you can go with a evga reference card and get either a zalman or arctic cooling fan they had awsome reviews on cooling and noise i ended up getting the asus dcII its really quiet. And the 570 runs anything i play at maxed settings with no problem crysis2/badcompany2/gta4 never seen it above 54.c with 24 inch 1080p

i am choosing between two cards, this one(reference zotac gtx 570)
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0354645

this zotac one is 279.99 with a rebate

and this one (gtx 480 twin frozr II)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127526
this one is 299.99

i know that they are pretty even, but the gtx 570 is cooler than a reference gtx 480, and they are much quieter. however with the custom cooler wouldnt the gtx 480 at least be as quiet as the gtx 570 and maybe cooler?
also, with the twin frozr II cooler, would the gtx 480 overclock well? i really need help with deciding which one to pick, so any advice would be really welcomed.

also i play games at 1080p and have a phenom II 955 overclocked to 3.6 ghz if that matters.

thanx in advance

edit: also, i have a gtx 260 right now and i want to use it in physx if that adds any information that might be useful
I've been running an EVGA GTX 480 since it's introduction, added a second Zotac AMP 480 and a Zalman VF3000F (for the EVGA card) a few months ago.
Of course I am going to recommend a GTX 480 with a good cooler.

However, from the link posted by superj1977:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-432-_-Product
That ASUS GTX 570 with the DCII cooler and it's custom design is a very unique, well-made 570, and one that I certainly wouldn't hesitate to get.
If you look at it's in-cart price on Newegg, it isn't that much more expensive than either of the two cards you quoted.

Thread Starter
thanx guys. after reading the thread a bunch of times and looking online i am going with the gtx 570 dcII. its a slightly larger investment, but i think a good one in the long run. it just means i wont be getting bf3 (saving my money for serious sam 3).

thanx for the advice guys and you all have been a great help.

Ah, I'm so glad I saw this thread! I just did this and bought the Zotac GTX570 from Microcenter, I love it and it's over clocking alright. The biggest problem right now is one that easily amendable... I need a more powerful PSU greater than 550watt. OCing shuts the computer down because this card is drawing more power than the PSU can deliver.

I also think (but don't quote me on this) that the gtx570 is the optimized version of the gtx480. Correct me if wrong please.
