[RESOLVED] Computer won't turn on

Thread Starter
Well it was apparently the MOSFETS that went bad. MSI has RMA'ed the board, and I now have heatsinks on them and will not be doing anything crazy with it.

OK, was playing around with the AMD Overdrive software and tried the auto OC setting. It had just started, only at 201 FSB and the temps started going up, they hit 65*C and the computer shut down before I was able to cancel it. No BSOD, just went black and computer was off. The LED was flashing like it does when it goes to sleep. Hit Enter, and nothing (no fans on, no HDD sound, just the Power LED flashing), wiggle the mouse and click the buttons, still nothing (usually just hitting enter wakes it up). So I push the power button, nothing, still just a flashing LED. Push and hold the power button, again, nothing. Reset button, same. I turn the power off on the PSU, wait 10 or so seconds, flip it back on, press the power button, nothing, and the LED is not flashing anymore. No Beeps, lights or fan movement at all.

So far I have:
Reset the BIOS, both with the jumper first, then after no change, removed the battery for 5 minutes. No boot.
Tried another known working PSU, nothing. Old PSU works on another system.
Removed GPU. Nothing. GPU works in another system.
Took RAM and CPU from other working system, nothing. RAM and CPU work in other rig.
Also, this was trying to turn on with a known working power switch; a spare I have from an old case, it works on another system, plus I also tried just jumping the power pins on the MoBo, so thats not it either.
Looked over the motherboard and don't see anything abnormal (no burnt or melted looking parts).

So basically I have ruled out everything except the motherboard, correct? I am guessing it is RMA time?

BTW, it is an MSI 785GM-P45 in my sig rig.

unplug the 4/8 pin CPU connector. If it turns on, MOSFETs are dead

sorry to say , but low end msi boards are crap . Higher ends are not . for reliable lower end use asus or gigabyte

It has a 3+1 vrm desigh so it cant handle a lot . probably fried . Mosfets are probabbly dead . I have 4+1 VRM desig board , and i put some cooling on them to not to fry them because i oced my cpu . cooling is a must , not just the cpu itself . the board too .

This. I would suggest a quality 880g or 890gx/fx board.

Some are:

The MSI 890FXA-GD70
The Crosshair IV Formula, or even the V Formula
And some people like the BIOSTAR TA890FXE

As to the 880G, the ASUS M5A88-V EVO is the best bet for that route.

Well, you are 100% correct.

I went out and plugged a fan into it (is is bare now with no CPU or RAM) and with the 4 pin unplugged, the fan would turn on. I shut it off, plugged in the 4 pin and when I tried to turn it on, the fan wiggled and stopped, and it think I heard a very quiet "click".

Guess the MOSFETs (whatever they are) are shot.

I know it was not the greatest board, but it was free with the CPU.

Setting up an RMA with MSI now.

When the new mobo arrives, you can put a heatsink on the MOSFETs(voltage regulators).
Check the pic. I marked the MOSFETs.

Thanks. I googled them and see that now.

I may get a new board. This one has not been worth a darn for unlocking (I have had 2 CPU's that would unlock on other boards but not this one) and does not overclock very well.

Or I may swap boards with my HTPC (it has a similar Gigabyte 785GM AM3 board).

Well, got a new board back today from RMA (typing on it from my test bench right now).

I am just sticking with this board for now (will save up for a bulldozer system around Thanksgiving) and will stay with what I know it can do.
I also put some cheap heat sinks on the MOSFETS to hopefully keep this from happening again.
