[RESOLVED] Computer won't turn on - Page 2

OOOH.... MOSFET fail on a 95W TDP processor.... I feel quite sorry for you there
Let's hope they don't take the blow for you for now. In the meantime, I'm noting this incident.

yea, thats what I get for playing with AMD Overdrive instead of doing it myself.

I don't think AMD overdrive had anything to do with this. It's definitely not the best, most stable, and most efficient method of OC-ing (esp. with that auto OC feature), but it can work to some extent. Rather I would put the blame on your motherboard. This 785GM-P45 is part of an MSI lineup known for failures. It uses a low-end 3+1 power phase. If your usage of a 212+ is correct, that is removing VRM cooling (blows OVER and not onto VRMs) and that significantly heightens VRM failure chance. This going out on a 95W TDP processor at near stock speed, is what really throws me off. Honestly, I know of low end MSI boards being quite bad sometimes, but not this bad.

EDIT: Board seems to be rated for 95W max TDP only, and of course rating is done at stock speed w/stock cooler. Looks like this may just be one of those boards where any push over the limits results in instant damage; other boards are known to be damaging but not this easily.

Yea, but I have been running it with the 840 OC to 3.5 in the BIOS @ stock volts (can't change them) for 2 months, with about 3 weeks straight folding during that time on it with no issues.
Before that, I had an x2 555 @ ~3.7 on it for about 6 months with no issues.

Within 5 minutes of trying the AMD Overdrive, the board died.

I now know this is not a great board, and will not push it any more. I will keep it at 3.5 ghz.
I may turn this into my server board once I upgrade though with a Sempron 140 or similar.
