HELP! wats this sound my gpu is making?

Thread Starter
So I have a Evga Gtx 480 SC under water.. as in my sig but i am overclocking it and i was at...

Core Voltage- 1100
Core clock- 875
Shader clock- 1750
Memory clock-2000

But when i turn on Furmark it makes a really weird sound. I though it was burning the card but my temps stay under 60c... ??? It sounds like this prolly off but like volts shooting from one metal to another like a clicking sound but a deeper sound...

Anyways is this normal it even does it a little at stock clocks but overclocked it gets louder?

Help please thank you
Victor

It's coil whine and it is perfectly normal. It won't harm the card, bit it is very annoying.

Probably "coil-whine".

See if it sounds like any of these matches.

http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...oil+whine&aq=f

Coil-whine is normal though, but, it could also likely be just the fan itself is loose or malfunctioning as it would get worse the faster it attempts to spin, and so would coil-whine.

Yea, whining from GPUs is common when they are under high load and drawing lots of power.

It doesnt really sound like those it sounds like a clicking sound.. How come it gets louder when i overclock it higher? It only does it when its on furmark..Also can someone help me get stable at 900? As long as this sound doesnt harm my gpu... Is it bad to overclock the 480 that high? Sorry i know im asking a lot but i just want to make sure im not going to harm the card in anyway...

Edit- Oh so its when its drawing more power and under full loud?

Iv never heard that before so it freaked me out thanks for the help though...

If you're OC'ing it go back to stock and see if you still hear the sound in Furmark, also monitor temps.

You should be more worried about the noise than an insignificant OC.

If you only hear it in Furmark that logically means only Furmark is working your GPU enough to make the fan spin fast enough to make the noise, try unscrewing the fan and reseating it. See if a blade is damaged too.

What should i do instead? Msi kombuster doesnt do much to my gpu atleast i think cuz its weird my temps are soo much lower on that software then Furmark... And its not a fan issue cuz i dont have a fan im on a water block lol Also How do you take your volts higher? I cant get mine above like 1.138 im Msi afterburner...

furmark is fine to use as long as temperature is in check and your power supply can handle it. But yeah my 6950 does this and was a little sketched out at first, but I figured out it happens. I only heard it in Furmark and my temps were fine. Don't worry about it, but if you REALLY can't live with it you could try to get the company to replace it, but I'm not sure if you can. You could try, or you could just brush it off because if you only hear it in Furmark then chances are you wont hear it in anything else. Just put your nose near the exhaust and take a fews sniffs... LOL if you don't smell anything funny then you should be fine.

Edit: woops, forgot the fact you are under water. It's all good though dude. It is quite a sketchy sound though. Mine is like a slight buzzing and pulsating vibrating in my ears.
