I thought it was held on by clips. My stock cooler was like that EDIT: for my AMD build /EDIT. I swapped out my fan by using a flat-head to jimmy the clips open on one side.

The default HeatSink that came with my 955 BE looks like it could fail at any time the fan looks so cheap. Get a good $20-30 after market heatsink + some arctic silver thermal paste and you'll be set.
