question about ubuntu and wubi. - Page 2

Also, when installing whatever *buntu you decide on, be sure and make a separate /home partition so you can distro-hop without losing any important files. Give about 20GB to / and for SWAP, 2X RAM capacity is a good guideline, and use the rest for /home.

Yes, desktop will work on your laptop. The main difference between 'Desktop' and 'Server' *buntu is that the server release doesn't come with a GUI [as a GUI isn't needed on a server].

I still suggest you use Xubuntu rather than Ubuntu, too.
I would suggest Lubuntu over Xubuntu any day to be honest. Xubuntu really isn't all that "lightweight" these days.

Wait, you're telling me Cannocial found a way to make a XFCE install bloated?

Where did I leave my pitchfork, and who is bringing the torches? We shall meet at Cannocial HQ!

How are we defining bloated? The last I checked most distros that pre-packaged XFCE into an iso had it end up being about the same size as KDE spins. LXDE however is not exactly a DE I recommend for completely new to computers, linux, or people without a desire to learn because it really is the barest DE I've used. Most customization comes from non GUI things for it. Hell, I had to add in XFCE powermanager just to get control of the monitor brightness and battery information on my netbook. Plus, you have to tweak a line of (code I think) just to get laptop/netbook trackpads to have them work as the left mouse button with a tap.

There shouldn't be any folders...

In InfraRecorder, you put a blank CD into the drive, and go File>Burn Disk Image

Wait, what?

You shouldn't be downloading a .zip file, it should be an .iso file...

Okay. Once you download the ISO, you tell InfraRecorder to burn it to a blank CD on the slowest setting your drive supports.

Then just pop it into the computer and boot from it.
