Paint Detailing (advice needed)

Thread Starter
I was browsing a couple HAF932 worklogs, and I stumbled upon one that was exactly 2 years ago (minus 1 day) that, in my opinion, had a nice idea.

How would I go along to paint that?
I was thinking to mask up what I don't want to paint, and then sanding off the area that I do want to paint. Then get some gray self etching primer and paint a gray base color.

Thoughts? Would what I want to do be durable enough? Once it's done, a single scratch can't really be fixed without dedoing all of it.. damn, sharpie needs to make custom colored markers to fit my needs!

Found some very good guides that might be useful to you.

Interior of the case, but it's basically the same.

This one is more specific to mirrored finishes, but the technique is very much the same.

When painting something, surface preparation is one of the most important parts of the process.

Not asking generally how to paint, I'm asking how to precisely add details. Big difference from painting white walls from painting tiny figures
