Intel ssd dips in performance?

Thread Starter
As u guys can see there is a dip in performance early on thne it smooths out somewhat. Its an intel 320 series. i just bought it yesterday. it is normal to see a dip like that? I have ran the intel toolbox and everything is set up properly and I'm running AHCI mode. Also im wondering it it was a good buy at $250? My plans are to wait on ivy bridge and a new mobo but i am also unclear about if the new processors will be compatable with a mobo that i would purchase today with sata 6.

Current build:
Q9550 @3.33 ghz
Asus P5Q
8gb DDR 2 ram
BFG GTX 285 (yes the one with the incorrect bios)
Case is brand new cooler master HAF X

did you disable all unnecessary background programs?
Sometimes other processes running in the background cause dips like that.

Install the latest Intel chipset drivers.
Install the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
Turn on write caching (in RST or Windows).

The difference between the RST iata_enu.exe and iata_cd.exe downloads is that the enu is English only. The cd is multi-language, which is why it is bigger.

And a good buy a $250? No, a hard sell. They were $210-220 just over a week ago. It wasn't a bad deal, just, there were better deals.

To answer your original question, OP, these performance dips just correlate to where you have a lot of data written physically on the NAND chips. If you take a defrag tool and Analyze the drive (and ONLY analyze, do NOT defrag), you'll see that the blocks of data roughly matches the areas where HD Tune reports a drop in performance.

Basically, you get full performance if no data is on the NAND. Less if you have data written on it.

Just please, read a little bit around other threads here. I see people again and again asking the same question, although there are 5 threads where people already made their suggestions and voiced their concerns.

Especially, there is a lot of negative talks about OCZ drives. So it would be wise to avoid SSDs with sandforce controller (some particular one, not sure which). Most recommended SSDs are by Crucial at the moment, followed by Intel for their reliability.

Good luck with your future choice and purchase. Sorry for being grumpy.
