Thermalright Silver Arrow in Fractal Design Define R3

Hi All,

I'm looking to put the Thermalright Silver Arrow into my new build, which I'm hoping to put in the Fracal Design Define R3...

Can anyone confirm that this CPU cooler will fit in the Define R3, when mounted on an ASUS Z68 Pro board with i2500K?

Also, if anyone can confirm that I can use the heatsink with RAM that has high heat sinks, when the second fan is moved to the back of the cooler that would be appreciated. If I had to use the "further away" RAM slots would this affect performance in any way?

Thanks all!

The SA is rather infamous for not tolerating high heatsinks on RAM. Usually it's better to buy low profile generic RAM heatsinks for your RAM.

If you're wedded to RAM ego combs, you'll need an Archon or an Armageddon.

Happy to go with low profile RAM then, but desperately want the R3... any ideas if it will fit with the 14cm fans? Thanks so far!

I'd recommend looking to see what fans fit by examining the specs at various vendors and on the maker's website. If you still can't get answers, write off to the manufacturer.

Thanks for the reply... Believe me, I have looked EVERYWHERE and no one seems to have this setup. I have written off to Fractal Design and hope they reply soon as want to order before noon tomorrow :\\.

Wish someone could provide me an answer. I don't want to have to get a dremel out to make it fit

The Define R3 uses a 120mm exhaust fan. It should be able to fit a SA.

You can write to a reviewer and ask.

As for the RAM, you may only need to get one or two low profile heatsinks for the RAM sticks closest to the cooler. They are available in aluminum and copper.

And if you like, you can put a TY-140 or Slip Stream 140 on your side panel.

All arrived and installed...

For future reference for everyone, the Silver Arrow fits in fine in an R3, and even has enough space above the heatsink to install a 14cm exhaust fan in the top of the case.

The only thing I'm not sure is if you could get a side fan on the case, although I'm not using one so its no issue to me . I think it would be ok with a 12cm fan, but a 14cm one may clash with the heatsink... Not sure!

I have low profile XMS3 RAM, and it doesn't cause any issues. I suspect, if you used high profile RAM with heatsinks, you could fit them under the Silver Arrow fan, but this would push the fan up and then it wouldn't fit in an R3. If you have a wider case you could probably have both and it wouldn't likely be a problem.

Thanks for the help! Fractal design never did reply to my e-mail, but never mind

Great! Now post your specs. And while you're at it, lets have some pics.

Hey,

I'm new here and i'm planning to get the same setup: Define R3 with the silver arrow.
I was planning on getting an intake fan on the top front. But i'm wondering if there is enough room. You say you can fit a top exhaust fan? So there is enough room between the cooler and the top of the case? But if I put a 140mm fan on top in the front is the fan cleared or is it still behind the silver arrow? I made a drawing to make it more clear .

Could you maybe post a picture to show the clearance? I've found a picture but on that one it seems there is no room at all

Thanks
