Planned build questions: need advices (video card, power supply, RAM)

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
Its been a long time since I've built/played with my computer set-up but recently the ASUS mobo broke and I'm in need to rebuild everything. I see that i'm really behind since the days when i first build my "top of the line" system (around 2008). So i need some advices and have some questions if any1 can help. Its more of a quick fix/little upgrade build plan.

Currently/planned:
- Asus M2N32 deluxe (which broke) --> upgrading to --> Foxconn mobo
- Corsair HX 1000w
- AMD X2 7750 --> upgrading to --> Phenom X4 9950 CPU
- (2) GTX 280 (1 EVGA, 1 BFG) --> planning to add (1)---> GTX 280 FTW edition .
- (4) 2gb corsair dominator DDR2 ram --> maybe later upgrade to more RAM ?

1.) Is the power supply enough ? i'm worried about the power supply being enough when I upgrade to 3-way SLI and the quad core processor. Does anyone know how much power each video card would consume and if my current power supply is/will be adequate with my planned upgrades?

2.) What is different in the GTX 280 FTW version , will FTW edition work with the other (2) GTX 280 card currently, and will I see performance gain in 3-way SLI? I want to do a 3-way SLI and planning to get a third video card which is the EVGA GTX 280 FTW version. Will it be better in performance, etc. ? What will happen when i combine it with my other (2) GTX card on 3-SLI mode ? will I get anymore performance or everything will just "average" out ?

3.) relating to 3-way SLI vs. 4-way SLI GTX 280 card, would i see any appreciable performance ? i've read somewhere that 4-way SLI actually "downgrades" performance?
would the power consumption, etc. actually drag performance down in 4-way vs. 3-way SLI ?

4.) What is the max RAM capacity ? I heard some time ago that with windows Vista, max Ram = 8gb ? If i upgrade to newer Windows 7 (or whatever is best out there right now), will I be able to use more RAM ? What is the max and how much RAM should i add ?

- Any other opinions/advice would be appreciated.

Ram usage depends on what version you're using. Basic = 8, Home Premium = 16. Either way, 8GB is still quite a lot.

1) Yes, the power supply is more than sufficient.

2) I would say you're better off getting new cards than to go 3 way SLI. The scaling is pretty bad, and for the price you could do much much better. Sell your old cards and start anew I say.

3) It won't downgrade performance, but the scaling is awful, especially with those older cards. Read above.

4) With
Windows Vista Basic 64 bit - 8GB
Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit - 16GB
Any other Windows Vista 64 bit - 128GB
For Windows 7 it is the same as above except 198GB for the higher versions
All 32 Bit Operating systems support just under 4GB maximum.
