ATI/AMD CrossFireX 11.5 vanilla - tedious way to see if the temps and fans are ok

Hey guys,

I have 2 HD 5870's in crossfireX - different manufacturer's. One is released by HIS under the ATI reference PCB and the other is Gigabytes own HD 5870 with their custom PCB. I modified the cooling on the stock PCB and installed the arctic cooling accelero xtreme. The card plays at 51C in BC2 @ 1920X1080 with maximum settings (AA, AF, everything High, HBAO on, Vsync off) with the fans at 60%. The Gigabyte is at around 70C with fans at 75%. I get an average FPS of about 150. During explosions it dips to 90-100 and during heavy firefights with about 15+ enemies - its around 110-120. Can anyone see if this is what they are getting with their Crossfired HD 5870s? See the sig for more info

I had a problem setting this up. I used to use a combination of HWMonitor and Afterburner to see if everything was ok but this does not report correct temperature, voltage and clock readings. It told me my HIS HD 5870 was at 1.44V which pretty much blows the card and it was running 850/1200 Mhz all the time while the other card (Gigabyte) was ok at 1.06V and was idling correctly. I used Catalyst to mess around but for some reason it would not detect the other card and reported 0C and 20% fan usage. When you tried to tweak the fan usage from after burner for both cards while HWMonitor and Catalyst Control center was running - nothing would happen.

My friend told me not to use Catalyst Control Center to monitor the cards. He said to use GPU-Z and Afterburner (start GPU-Z first and then Afterburner) and I was able to monitor the correct voltages and temperatures on the cards. I could use Afterburner to tweak the fans and the proper results would be seen on GPU-Z. I just wanted to know if there is an easier way to monitor temps while tweaking fans using 2 different cards - Yes I know, next time I will get identical cards.

Looks good.
I'm the same, 100-200fps depending on the carnage on screen.

Afterburner is good so long as you use the 2.0.0 version, some newer version can cause crashes to DT.

And ditch HWM, it rarely plays nice with other monitoring apps.
Also gpu-z doesn't need to be open, AB is a standalone app.

Hey grunion, thanks for reading - I'm using Afterburner 2.1.0 and yeah you are right it caused a crash to desktop right after the 2nd mission (the snow and the heli at the end). Thanks for the tip. Afterburner 2.1.0 could also be a reason why it wouldnt let me change the fan speeds and look at the actual speeds unless I had GPU-Z running. Thanks a million for the tips!

Will 2.0.0 or 2.2.0 Beta3 work? or do you recommend 2.0.0?

2.0.0 nothing else.

hey union - what catalyst drivers are you using? 11.5 or hotfix?
WHQL, rarely do I use a hotfix, unless it has a specific bug fix.

Also don't forget to install the CAP.

thanks for the cap tip grunion - im pretty sure i downloaded the latest one - got the CAP 2 days ago. Also, did you plug the monitor into the lower card or the higher card? I have a Thermaltake Xaser VI - click here for pic. I removed the two bottom bays so the bottom card gets a lot of breathing room. One of my cards has the Arctic Cooling Accelero Extreme - click here for pics. It takes up about 2.5 slots and runs at 51 C when it is the secondary on load at 60% fan. I currently have the gigabyte HD 5870 custom pcb - click here for pics. That is the primary card and it runs much hotter as I noticed the VRM's were not helping (unlike the Accelero) and its also primary. Do you recommend hooking up the accelero to the monitor and running the fans higher (at 100% I hear nothing, unlike the Gigabyte which is not too bad but it is a bit noisy.

Also when not running intense games - just doing programming/movies/flash videos - does disabling CrossfireX have any temperature improvements?

Thanks a lot grunion - you have been a great help to me and you are very polite.

The Accelero should be the bottom card.
I'm sure you've realized having it as the top card would totally starve it of air.

So maintain the set up that provides the most spacing between cards.

My card won't output a signal from the second slot, not really sure why it doesn't.
But theoretically it should help reduce temps

Disabling cfx, IDK, mine are always running full speed in CFX.

You could disable ulps in the registry, this will allow the cards to fully down clock when not stressed.

Having reference cards I'm able to mod the bios, I reduced all lower power state voltages, dropped idles about 5°c.

More airflow if possible..

Oh and how hot do they run?
> 70°c on those coolers is fine.

thanks for the quick reply. I did not touch the registry (could you tell me more about ULPS) but when I look at GPU-z and afterburner, both clock down to 157/300 @ idle which should be 2D mode. Temps at idle GPU1 (Gigabyte) - 43-45C and GPU2 (Accelero) is 39-40C. The accelero card has fans @ 20% while the Gigabyte always has a minimum of 55%. When gaming the GB temps went to 74-75 at 75% fan speed while the accelero is running at 51C with 60% speed. I will try plugging the monitors into the accelero - hopefully that works :S.

These temperatures are with loads at 99% on both cards as reported by Afterburner in Bad Company 2 (Everything set to max - HBAO On, VSYNC Off, 8xAA, 16XAF) - playing through 1st and 2nd mission. Similar temps with Furmark preset 1080p OC but lower since it did not run as long.
Ambient room temperatures at around 25C

I'm a bit of a temperature freak lolol
