How to render a car in blender?

I'm working on a car for a project at school. I'm pretty much done with the outer shell, but I don't know how to render it properly. All I've done is set smooth, but I don't know how to make it actually look good (set smooth sucks) or how to make a good car paint material. Help?

Did you set it smooth in the render settings or visual settings? It's been a while since I've used Blender and I may be thinking of 3DS Max but there are two smooth settings, one for how it looks to you and the other for how much it actually gets subdivided when you render it.

I've never used the built in render engine for blender so I can't help you there but if you want to try out an external renderer, I prefer Indigo for the realistic results. The render time, however, can be a bit on the long side.
