My "modest" build : i7-2600k/580SLI/HAF-X/NH-D14 - Page 11

The tech guy is rather reluctant to do the grill cutting, said something about being afraid the frame could distort itself and become unstable. In any case, it seems he definitely doesn't have much experience when it comes to doing such physical modifications, so I guess I'll just go for the 140mm rear exhaust and let the rest of the air push out "naturally".

I'll go for the MegaFlow and TY-140 then... and the PCB removal sounds really easy, so that'll be done as well.

Thanks for all the help everybody. Really looking forward to my new rig now.

TC; I want to see your epic sleeving when it is finished
@Drakhor
Ehume and TC or whoever suggested the idea is most likely right about grille cutting to improve performance. I have no doubt. But it is true that you can make your case a bit flimsier: An old PC case I had would literally BEND when I moved it. The fans I installed, as a result, made terrible vibration noise. I think that you should just stick the 140 on the back and reverse your top 2 to intake. I have my HAF X like that and temps went down 10ºc across the system.

If your fans rattled you had them attached in an unfortunate fashion. These days I would recommend Velcro or these.

I'm glad your temps went down so nicely. But how strong is the HAF X? Does it really need that grill for strength?

Honestly, I doubt it. But I like the grille so I don't accidentaly cut my finger in the H70 And I'm happy as it is, so I don't see a reason (at least in my case, pun intended trolol) to cut out the grille.
But, thanks to your advice and the advice from others and TC's fantastic thread, I lowered my haf x temps as stated in my previous post.

As to the fan noise, they did not make rattling noises, they just made this gigantic loud pitched whine that was terribly annoying. I used washers, nuts, bolts, everything you can think of. But, when I ran the fans out side of the case, they were dead silent...

Washers, bolts, nuts . . . and yet the fans are silent outside the case. That usually means they are vibrating a bit. A cushioned interface with the case fixes that, in my experience.

I was using cushioned silicon washers... very cushioned... 1cm thick :O
I just think that case was flimsy. The metal parts would literally BEND. My HAF X wont

Cushioned washers usually implies steel bolts. I use these to attach fans.

Thread Starter
You sure are jinxed with your HAF-X Butter
Mine does not do any rattling, pitching noise at all, like I said in another post, it's quieter than the 600T with stock fans ( and this with all the 8 fans in it ). Another thing that may happen is fan/case resonance, at certain RPMs, all my fans spin at different ones so maybe it's why I don't have more annoying noises. I didn't even use the Noctua noise compensators ( and I have like 12 of them, enough for three fans ) :/

possibly the air blowing through the grill... when they hit a case grill the air spreads out like crazy and can whine pretty bad
