Processor Cooling

Thread Starter
Hey
I have an unused computer that i want to overclock, just to mess around with. But beings its an old computer, i dont want to spend the money and install a cooler. I know this isnt a great thing, and maybe its a stupid question, but could i take the side off my optiplex, and set a normal house fan in the opening. Would i gain any cooling, or would it be too unsafe to do?

Thanks for the help.

Ok. I was thinking of using the fan to try and get rid of air, but i suppose i could try both directions, and see which keeps it the coolest. The specs are-

Optiplex 620
Pentium D 820
I have quite a few graphics cards i interchange
2GB Ram
Like aprox 1TB 10k rpm hard drive
Onboard sound.
Windows XP 32, and Win7 64(i know it doesnt need 64, but ive got it, so why not)

Its crap, and i use a Latitude d505 as my main. Im on low budget, due to the fact i play guitar, and drums. So my money goes there, and i just get by on crappy old computers. But a lot of the times, we log onto a terminal server, so that takes most of the power off the computer when i do that.

No those house fans don't do anything. You can just mod the cooler though. I put the cooler from a XPS Pentium D Dell on my P4 with some zip ties and it worked great.

iCrap, i dont really understand. Like are you saying you took the fan off of another computer, and ziptied it on top of the other fan, or just replaced it in general?

And would using two fans, one on each side, work? Or would i get the same result.
