Looking for another Mechnical Keyboard

Alright.... long story short I have the Black Widow Ultimate and it was a major upgrade over other keyboards I have used. And all my friends like it too (for how it types). And my wife really likes it including the sound (blue switches).

Thus I think this is a good time to get another keyboard and have my wife use my Black Widow Ultimate as I am wanting to try another mechanical keyboard.

What am I looking for? Well, to be honest I have some musts and then some preferences. Beyond that, I want the price to not exceed around $150 if it can be helped. A few bucks more won't sidetrack me if it is really worth it.

Musts:
  • Quality Over Everything
  • Durability. If I am going to spend $100+ I want the thing to last.
  • Want to avoid shiny keys (I know to wash your hands, but skin oil is just that, but some key caps really amplify the issue).
  • It would be nice to be able to replace the key caps in the future if need be or just to personalize it (some kind of image on the escape key and the WASD keys would be fun).
  • As far as switch type I def. do a variety of things, but am not an extreme gamer so def. not black switches. I hear brown is decent and I think blues are decent from my experience.

Preferences:
  • I hope a keycap set doesn't cost more than the board itself... lol.
  • The only decent other backlit board I know of is the Deck Legnd, but I don't know how they stack against a Filco, etc.
  • I hear things about the recent Ducky boards having fading/wear issues on the key caps so I would probably stear clear of those right now until the issue is dealt with.

Overall I am looking for a nice quality, respectable, durable, keyboard that will be music to my fingers when using it. I do plan on probably getting another mechanical keyboard by Christmas as well, but would like to get at least one in the next week or so for now. As far as I know there is nothing coming out around the corner in such a market to make cause to wait for something. Although I did see the Filco on Amazon.

Filco is the best IMO. They are very much a quality keyboard. The ninja filcos look interesting if you want to check those out.

Yeah, checked out the[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Majestouch-2-Tactile-Action-Keyboard-FKBN104M/dp/B004Z0XR2O/"] Ninja with brown switches[/ame].... does anyone know if the keys have the traditional coating to keep them from being shiny? Also, looks like the letters are pad printed. Is that true? And has anyone actually used and like looking at the legends on front of the keys as opposed to the traditional top? Sorry for the questions, just looking for those with experience on them. Thanks.

Whoa. I honestly didn't know what the whole Ninja thing was about until I clicked that link. Must...not...succumb to urges to buy.

I have no doubt that the keycaps will eventually get shiny. Most of the Filcos I have get shiny after a year or so unless you switch to different keycaps (PBT, POM, engraved, etc). As for the legends in front, those, of course, will not wear off and you shouldn't have any problem when you glance down at the keys either.

What has been your favorite or favorite keyboards? And is it fairly easy to find replacement keys? If so, where and what brands of keyboards are easy to find them for?

^ I might be a bit biased but one of my favorite boards is a Filco. Aside from the letters wearing off issue, Filco has some of the best keyboards with Cherry MX switches. Another problem that I've read about is the pinging noise coming from some of the key(s) when pressed but I think only a small percentage of Filco owners experience this (and maybe mostly with the Majestouch 2 boards).

As for keycaps, you can get replacement from various sources (Tankguys, Geekhack, Armygroup, etc). They'll fit anything that has Cherry MX switches on although Leopold's spacebar is in a league of its own. lol

From what I can tell Cherry Mx is the way to go unless you go for a Model M featuring the buckling spring.... at least reading mech. kybd. guide seems to point to that theory.

Thanks for the info. Thinking a Deck and Filco, but I dunno just yet.

Oh yeah... what is typical cost for replacing keys to a higher quality set? Or at least a range.

You're welcome and wait for Tankguys to replenish his stock. $35 plus shipping for black on black PBT keycaps is pretty good (ripster seems to like them tongue.gif ).
