Expanding Volume on RST

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I have a raid 5 array with 3 disks x 1.5 tb. I'm trying to expand to 4 disk but for some reason when i try I get an unknown error in RST anyone has any idea what is causing that ? I'm on a ICH10R chipset. Recreating the array is not an option since there is no way i can backup the data on the array.

Here you go from the Intel RST Help

Quote:
Adding a Disk to a Volume
You can add one or more SATA disks to an existing array to increase the system storage capacity. This feature can be useful if you want to create additional capacity in an existing volume.
This option is only available if:
■A RAID 0 and/or a RAID 5 volume is present;
■One or more SATA disks are connected to the computer and available;
■The available disk matches the internal or external connection type of the existing array disks. You cannot add an external disk to an array that includes internal disks, and vice versa. In specific advanced system configurations, this condition may not apply.
Refer to Connecting a Disk under Managing Disks for more information on installing SATA disks on your computer.

This action can also be performed from Manage Array. Refer to the Adding a Disk to an Array section for more information.
1.Under 'Status' or 'Manage', in the storage system view, click the volume to which you want to add a disk. The element properties are now displayed on the left.
2.Click 'Add disk'.
3.Select the disk you want to use to increase the array capacity.
4.Click 'Add Disk'.
5.Restart your computer for changes to take effect, and then use Windows Disk Management* to increase the partition size on the volumes for which a disk was added, or add another partition.

Same disk type/size/connector? Also, make sure you have it on one of the ICHR ports.

Yep all the disk are the same brand type and size. Namely : Seagate ST31500341AS , 1.5 TB. The only other type of connector are SAS Marvell SAS connectors and i dont use them. I have a P6T Deluxe Motherboard if it can help. It's setup as raid in the bios. I'm using the latest RST from intel. Could the array not be initialized cause that ? I'm currently initializing it I tried before and it wasnt working.

Initializing it is going to wipe it. But, if you are/were in the middle of initializing it, then yes, that will prevent you from being able to add disks to the array.

Initializing for RST mean making the parity for the files making sure that data is splitted between disks. it's not going to wipe the disk. It's different from windows initialization. Otherwise no i wasn't initializing it while trying to add a disk.

I'm preparing for a format / reinstall of Windows 7. I wondering if this error is not caused by the fact that i messed with my hard drives drivers when i switched from AHCI to RAID. gonna keep you posted after the format.

Well formating did the trick. I just added the disk to the array without any error. it's now migrating the data to the new volume.
