Recommend me a Mobo + CPU for my Future Server

Thread Starter
I am up on most CPU's and boards regarding power desktop usage such as Sandy Bridge, etc., but don't know what is best to target for a home server. Could someone recommend me a board and CPU?

At the moment I have three 2TB F4 hard drives and a solid state to go in the server (unless the Solid State is useless). I also have the optical drive, DDR3, and am targeting a small Lian Li case for the server (or something not overly large). Planning on it mostly being a backup and media server. Thought about trying other things on it as I got more curious. I am not sure what would separate the need for a high end CPU versus a normal lower power CPU in this setup, but that info is helpful as well. I don't need an excessive setup as I want to use it for intended purposes and a little headroom if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Indeed a start.... thanks, I hope to have more chime in... I am thinking this next paycheck (two weeks) will be a good time to buy unless there is a real nice deal before then.

You should look at this case It supports mitx boards and has 6 internal 3.5in drive bays

as for cpu mobo ect will it be a media server ie will it need to output hd video ect.

the i3 2100 would be a good cpu 3.1ghz dual core with hyperthreading

If thats too much the Pentium socket 1155 cpus start at 75

and a m-itx board of your choice

Just an i3 2100 and any decent H61 or H67 board will be plenty.

No because Sandy's have Intel Integrated Graphics, which is a lot better than the old GMA graphics with LGA775.

btw Depending on the OS you use, you could use a USB stick for OS and then you get more sata ports for storage drives

What os would you use? In my personal opinion I don't like OS on usb sticks. Back to the original question baybe go for an athlon II x4, its nice to have the extra bit of power, at least I think so.

Not sure on OS. I have an msdn account so I could always get any version of WHS. So the whole free thing with linux is moot. At that point it comes down to what is best, expandable, and plays friendly with remote access (pc, tablet, etc), streams to consoles, things like wd live, backs up multiple pcs, reliable, and dont know about using it as a server. Game servers seem to be best online. Website hosting seems to best online unless that is the focus of the machine and you have great connection speed (3mb/s for me, but may move in near future).
