Thread Starter
Main objective: getting great performance for the money.
Secondary objective: a modder's dream w/ lighting, monitors, controllers, etc.

MAIN PARTS:
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K
  • GPU: ASUS HD6950 1GB overclocked at 810MHz
  • MOBO: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe
  • RAM: 2x4GB Corsair Dominator GT 1866MHz w/ Airflow Pro status LEDs
  • SOUND: X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro (from my current rig)
  • SSD: OCZ Agility 3
  • STORAGE: 2TB Hitachi 5K3000 HDD
  • CASE: Xigmatek Elysium
  • PSU: Enermax PRO 82+ 625W (from my current rig)
  • COOLING: Antec Kuhler 920 + some Noctua NF-S12B FLX as case fans
  • ODD: LG GGW-H20L 6x Blu-ray drive (from my current rig)
  • MONITOR: Samsung SyncMaster 2343NW 23" @ 2048x1152 (from my current rig)
  • KEYBOARD: Roccat Valo
  • MOUSE: Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000
  • LIGHTING: 3xUV CCFLs (from my current rig) + various LEDs, various parts and accents will be painted with blue UV paint
  • CONTROLLERS & POWER MONITORS: Acquaero XT, Acquaero multiswitch, Zalman MFC3, Zalman ZMPCM1, Zalman ZM-VPM1

I have already ordered most parts, I haven't yet placed orders for the case and the acquaero hardware due to a temporary lack of funds.

What do you think?

I think... this will be an epic upgrade for you. But instead of the Hitachi HDD, try going with a Spinpoint F3, it's 1TB but a killer drive in terms of performance.

May also want to consider swapping the 6950 for a 560, it has CUDA and PhysX, not to mention its superior folding capability. But that's all on you, they're both great cards.

All in all, it looks like a pretty solid build.

Not really. The only feature worth mentioning is SSD caching, and since he's buying a dedicated SSD for a boot drive, Z68 is useless.

The 6950 is faster in games than the 560, especially when unlocked, which further increases its value. Unless he really needs CUDA the 560 probably wouldn't serve him as well as the 6950.

I actually had a faster CPU and better GPU in my sig rig (I swapped them for less power-hungry parts in preparation for turning the PC into a file server) but yeah I'd say it'll be a HUGE jump in terms of performance and features (thanks to the P8P67 Deluxe).
According to the reviews, the 6950 is faster than the 560 in most cases (actually even faster than 560 Ti). I'm not getting a 1TB drive as I already have 2 of them and would like to have just one 2TB unit to reduce noise. Right now my soon-to-be server is almost dead silent, the only noise is coming from the HDDs.
The Z68 is indeed useless and actually offers lower performance.

Thanks for the replies.

As railfan844 said, unlock that 6950 and you got yourself the best bang for buck.

Is there some guide on OCN or somewhere else for unlocking it?

TBH I'd get either a Corsair 800D (more expensive but its a dream for watercooling if you ever choose to get into it) or the silverstone RV01 (the looks might be to your preference or not but the cabling is phenomenal.

Its a really nice rig btw.

Love the build. I wouldn't put too much on finding a 6950 that unlocks, it seems like AMD hardware disabled the shaders on most of the newer versions. In fact there aren't even any reference designs for sale on Newegg right now, a lot of the non-reference don't have BIOS switches. I did find a Visiontek reference on Tigerdirect here.

If it doesn't work it's less than a 10% difference, so no big deal. Good luck.

How is the 800D a watercooler's dream? The Elsyium is much bigger and thus offers even more watercooling options. You can have 360 rads at the top, bottom and vertically behind the 5.25" slots. At the back it has no less than 7 WC holes.
Besides if you read my first post watercooling is not my main objective, what I'm more interested in is modding and the Elsyium offers many more possibilities than pretty much any other case..
The RV01 has indeed looks to my taste but as I said what I want is the case with the most space available both in terms of expansion slots and interior room so I can install all the things that I want! I've been planning this build for a long time and 5-6 5.25" bays won't cut it..
