Cool way to keep folding

I have mentioned it a couple of times that both I am waiting on a window AC unit and that the extra heat from folding really gets to me, even one 275 gpu is to much to have going for me to remain comfortable (and be able to sleep) well I think I have found an answer, it may be obvious but I still think I will mention it.

I find that this single 955 I am running as a Linux test (that means smp folding) when not clocked too high will not over power what little cold air gets into my room as it is. So my answer to wanting to both sleep but not have any "zero" points days is to simply run one smp rig. This is what I can do until my AC unit gets here and then it is back into high production. The obvious part is I never thought it through enough to realize that a single 4 core cpu will put less heat in the room than any of the gpu's I have.

Gpu's dump out a ton of heat!! That's why I took a 480 out of my sig rig and dumped it into another that's not in my room One I can live with but 2 was annoying.

Umm... Derp? AMD CPUs put out much less heat than modern GPUs. But I'm in a similar situation. I just added a GTX 560 and that turned my rig into a space heater. I just kill the GPU folding at night and fold on the 1090T.

I can't even have one of my i7-930's (at 4.05GHz) that are on water folding or it is unbearable. Just 4 cores and not at maximum overclock either for me.I am going for a pretty good AC unit and it will be interesting to see how hard I must run it to be comfortable with most of my folding gear also running.

It looks like this 955 is going to give me 8kppd. I will wait till I can get more than one 24 hr period for a firm number but the level of heat and noise is almost not noticable. All I am doing is trying to stay away from having to stop altogether when it is so hot. I dropped my OC back to 3.6 so I could drop my fans down to where I cannot hear them. I like this idea as a temporary solution of how to maintain output and not heat the house. If I do stay at 8kppd this will be about 1k higher than I expected from a 955,perhaps it is the native Linux working its magic?

Like I said I will wait for a really good sample but it is looking like native Linux does give a good boost in -smp folding. I had 2 gpu WU's mixed up in todays stats and I dropped one -smp right at the beginning of the period so today is a high note and not a regular day. Setting up this Ubuntu 10.10 was not hard at all so perhaps we (meaning the team) should promote native Linux folding a bit harder, that is if it does turn out to be a real winner.Curve, your 9500 ppd is an excellent bit of work for a 955 at 3.2. My first -smp folder was a 955 and I never saw that figure under a VM or with Windows. At one time we had to use a VM to -smp fold. We had this really bad WU (A2 core) and you had to use a VM. I say "had to" but all I can remember is that is the way I did them.I wonder if it is that the WU's are simply paying more. We should have a good sample at the end of the week.

Don't you have 3 I7 Rigs? All that power with an A\\C unit running on one line. I hope they wired your house with alternating lines for every plug. They have both bedrooms plus the bathroom on on line. I have 2 I7s running bigadv smp and a q6600 and a q9550 running smp. If I am working on another computer I have to shut down folding on one of the I7s or pop. I am thinking about getting a 30 amp box drop in the office bedroom just for the PCs, Printers and monitors. Also make sure you have good UPS units because when it gets really hot the A/C can drop the Voltage down to about 105 volts when its starts.
