Ubunto Install Help

post #1 of 31
Thread Starter
Well Ive been trying to update to version 11.4 but been unable to boot by CD or USB, it does read on my Windows OS but not on Ubuntu. Im not that familiar with Ubunto as I am with Windows so I got fed up playing around with it and thought would installing Windows and then run the Ubunto CD in that OS might solve my issue?

Figured to ask before I go ahead and wipe it all out.

If all else fails, try Wubi. It installs Ubuntu within Windows, so you can easily update and delete or whatever without messing up any partitions or anything.

Thing is I have Ubunto on this computer already for its natively support for touch screen but haven't used in a while and have version 9.04 I believe and need to update. Figured I wipe that and install Windows THEN slap in my 11.4 Ubunto CD and hope it boots up then. Or if someone here might have a way to update w/o having to do this but like I said I cant get it to boot on neither CD or usb...

You can give it a shot, but you lose every possible benefit from running Linux when you install with Wubi.

When you say you're trying to upgrade, do you mean you have an 11.04 CD and are trying to boot from it, despite having a working Ubuntu install going?

If thats the case, Aptitude can upgrade you from whatever version you're on to the latest. I think the command is something like:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Although a clean install is always the best idea, that will atleast get you running with the latest packages. But be aware, Ubuntu went away from Gnome to Unity for the DE, and I'm told it's terribad.

I decided to just wipe my C:drive and go with a clean install. And yes I do have 11.4 on a CD. Planning on installing Windows then boot with the Ubuntu CD. Can I do this w/o Wubi since you say I will lose using it?

If you already have a CD of 11.04 burned, you don't need to install Windows. There's nothing you can do with windows except use Wubi to install Ubuntu within Windows.

If the CD isn't booting, you might have a bad burn on your hands. Can it boot in any other computer?

If not, try downloading and burning the Alternate Instlal CD and use that to install Ubuntu.

Popped it in my other Windows OS machines and it boots up just fine so I figured just install Windows then reboot with the CD and call it a day.

But which is the alternative you speak of?
